Ecology Project: Biomes
Science 10 Pure
The biosphere is defined as the part of the earth that supports life. It is made up of the
atmosphere (air), lithosphere (land), and the hydrosphere (water). The interaction of these three
components provides the environmental conditions for the world. These conditions vary throughout the world and
as a result there are extremely different environments found throughout the world.
This project is going to focus on the different environments or BIOMES found throughout the world. Each group
(2 to 3) will choose a biome and research information regarding that biome and then they will present it to the rest
of the class. Your group can use a variety of ways of doing and presenting your project. Some suggestions are
power point, music, drama, written words, pictures/illustrations, cartoons, or graphs/charts. You will start by
reading your textbook pgs. 349 – 352 and 391 – 406 to get some understanding of your biome.
Biomes: Taiga, Tundra, Deciduous forest, Prairie grassland, Savannah grassland, Desert, and
Rainforest
Content:
a. Abiotic factors (nonliving factors that determine what biotic factors will live/grow in the
environment)
i. physiographic – physical features of the geographical area
including the altitude, latitude and topography
ii. edaphic – texture and chemical composition of the substrate
(soil)
iii. climatic – light (amount), temperature (averages, highs,
and lows), precipitation (amount & type), wind (amount &
effects), and fire (frequency & effects)
 include a climatograph (info on pg. 403 - 405)
 include the length of the growing season
b. Biotic factors (living factors)
i. dominant vegetation – provide a variety and use specific names
ii. dominant animals – provide a variety and use specific names.
c. Human impact – humans are always affecting the environment in negative
ways. List and explain two ways that humans are having a negative
impact on the environment. Provide a solution that has or can be
made to fix/reduce each problem.
Your project must include a bibliography that includes three or more
resources.
