A BRIEF NOTE ON SOIL CONSERVATION ACTIVITIES
IN SUNDARGARH DISTRICT.
The Soil Conservation department has started its functioning in the district from
1953 with the start of Soil Conservation sub division, Bargaon and subsequently Sundargarh S.
C. sub division and Soil Conservation Division during 1972. The department has started its
work in the catchment treatment of River Valley Project of Hirakud Dam project. There are
five working soil conservation Sub Divisions in the district headed by the Asst. Soil
Conservation Officers at Sundargarh, Bargaon, Panposh, Lahunipara and Bonai working under
the administrative control of Soil Conservation Officer, Sundargarh. Now the department is
implementing the following centrally sponsored schemes.
NWDPRA
One micro watershed in each block are now being implemented in all the
rainfed areas having irrigation potential of less than 30% during 11th plan. It is now in the 4th
year of implementation and the NRM components under the scheme will now be met through
convergence from MGNREGS. The funds for farm production sector and livelihood
component will be met from the scheme.
RKVY
During 2008-09, 20 nos. of micro watershed are under implementation under
the scheme during 11th plan covering 15 blocks. Emphasis is laid down for promoting the
livelihood component through grant and revolving fund to the watershed stake holders
categorizing the watershed people through well being ranking and promoting their livelihood
alongwith the NRM work.

Under the scheme there are five phase watershed clusters are under
implementation in the district.

IWMP
During 2011-12 seven watershed clusters are ongoing as per GoI, MoRD
norm, covering Gurundia, Lathikata, Kutra, Balisankara, Hemgir, Lefripara, & Rajgangpur
block covering 74 watersheds with a treatable area of 37012 hect. Now the watershed project
report are under the process of submission for which the PRA exercise, field survey, collection
of village revenue maps etc. has been completed and the project report concerning to the
watershed will be submitted shortly for release of 14% share under the scheme. Previously
6% grant was allotted amounting to Rs. 158.03 lakhs. Now the entry point activities in
concerned watershed are under progress.

As per the desk review meeting held recently during June in New Delhi, Krishi
Bhawan a policy decision has been made that the NRM components under the scheme will
now be met from the scheme MGNREGS as the funds will not be available for NRM
components under the scheme. The division is preparing the plan outlay on NRM components
of the above watershed and submitting proposal to the Director, Soil Conservation, Orissa for
saturation of those watershed.
MGNREGS
The soil conservation department in the district has achieved the following
NREGS works during 2010-11 and submitted the target and annual labour budget for 2011-12
as follows.
