Purpose
To have oversight of the effectiveness and efficiency of the Faculty’s research degree
management and support arrangements, and to advise the Faculty Research and
Innovation Committee on development of relevant academic policies, systems and
processes.
Terms of Reference
1.
Policy/strategy
i)
To advise the Faculty Research and Innovation Committee on the
development, implementation and review of faculty academic policies affecting
research degree provision
2.
Quality systems
i)
To seek initial approval, and oversee implementation of, the Faculty’s
Research Degrees Quality and Standards Assurance statement, as an integral
component of the overall Faculty QSME system.
ii)
To advise the Faculty Quality committee and the University Research Degrees
Sub Committee as appropriate on the implementation and development of
local quality assurance processes for research degrees
3.
Academic delivery
i)
To ensure that the processes of induction, enrolment, confirmation of PhD
registration and minor changes to the registered status of research degree
students are applied appropriately.
ii)
To proactively monitor the progress of research degree students at local level
to maintain a high quality learning experience and to satisfy University and
national expectations regarding timely completion
iii)
To liaise with the Faculty Research Ethics Committee as appropriate regarding
ethical issues affecting research degree programmes
iv)
To encourage, promote and support the sustenance of a supportive local
environment for postgraduate research students consistent with the
University’s Code of Practice for research students and their supervisors
4.
Reporting, liaison & operation
i)
to report annually to the Faculty Academic Board on effectiveness
ii)
to liase with other Faculty and University committees as appropriate to
promote good communications, quality enhancement and good practice.
iii)
To ensure that the University’s policies on equal opportunities are taken into
account in the fulfilment of these terms of reference
iv)
To establish and manage working groups necessary to support effective
discharge of these terms of reference
v)
To consider and report on any other issue referred to it by the Faculty
Academic Board
