Senate feedback on Provost’s proposals for Academic Structure

We will have a Dean of A&S

We will have a Dean of Education

We will search for a third Dean of Professional Studies

DISCUSSION

School of Management wants a Dean with management background.

Associate Dean for Career Ed

Dean would be able to maintain some teaching responsibilities

Interim Position would allow the process

CIOS

Interim Dean should be internally recruited. Recruitment should be advised by faculty

Career Ed

Associate Dean would support that program but the Dean of PS would speak for both programs

Career Ed…They would like Statewide support such as what Dean Karen Schmitt provided

Library has concerns about placement of library faculty under Provost Services in the

Administrative flow chart with . The chart places the Library with Research

Development, Institutional Research, and Grant Development Unit. The library faculty view their unit as dissimilar to these units because the library has faculty and the library provides instructional services directly to students. Library faculty are supervised by a

Regional Director of Library Services. Library faculty would prefer to see their unit represented on the chart by the title of its Director, as the Schools of Arts and Sciences,

Education, Management, and Career Ed are represented by their Deans. They would also like to see their unit, represented by their Director, placed next to Ketchikan Campus

Director and Sitka Campus Director on the left side of the chart.

Natural Sciences

Discussion of need for Chairs and an Associate Dean, Chairs and no Associate Deans, or just Chairs. We will bring up this discussion again at a later time.

Social Sciences

Bringing in the Dean with Tenure.

John and Robbie are more open to longer term contracts vs Tenure

MOTION : FS writes a resolution declaring support for hiring a Dean with tenure

Seconded by Schulte

Robbie clarified that Deans could apply for tenure

ACTION : Senators were asked to solicit departmental position on Chairs Deans

Associate Deans and what role these positions would have. What administrative duties each level would have.

SOTL Proposed Revisions

DISCUSSION

Management: We favor the SOTL no major changes

Library: OK with as it is

Career Ed: The Union (UAFT) has not signed off on the implementation of the SOTL.

Worried about how evaluations will be based upon the criteria. Some solutions proposed by faculty include finding the right criteria that would meet the satisfaction of bipartite faculty. Workload/Activity report language should be consistent

Humanities: no comments other than those brought up from Career Ed

CIOS:

Education: feels the matrix is confusing

Natural Sciences: language prior to the matrix mentions Professional Development whereas nowhere in faculty workloads are Professional Development mentioned. Second page there is a mistype where is says scholarship of teaching…it should say scholarly work.

Sitka: Liked SOTL for putting files together. Lots of cross references available.

Evaluation letters that were returned stated that student learning assessment was not clear.

Ketchikan: no faculty are in favor of the SOTL in its present form

Subcommittee needs to be made to revise and examine SOTL to refine examples of

Proficiency Leadership and Growth (Schulte, Martin, Gordon, Gladhart, Dillingham, and

Wall)

Career ED: training related to the mine very active

Humanities: pass

CIOS: any department need their services? If any faculty needs a session on computer related issues they should contact CIOS

Education: who will chair and who will be on the Dean search committee.

Natural Sciences: 2 things. Will the Faculty Senate appoint a committee to look at double majors? Humanities and Management will contact folks to serve on this committee. Whole lot of stuff going on in Anderson with respect to the move

Sitka: cosponsoring a behavioral health workshop for 16-24 years old students.

Ketchikan: Oyster summit
