Job Specification
1 Summary of the broad purpose of the position in relation to the organisation’s goals
The Student Careers Officer provides career and support services to prospective and current Institute
students, from pre-enrolment to course completion and supports Institute staff with information on
careers.
The Student Career’s Officer is responsible for the provision of a career/course advisory service to
students including financial information, referral and liaison with external agencies, professional
organisation’s and community groups including specialist services.
The Student Career’s Officer operates autonomously on a day to day basis, but collaborates with other
Student Services staff and the Manager in respect to supporting clients and service provision that enables
the establishment of a learning environment that responds to the engagement and retention of students.
2 Reporting/Working Relationships
Internal:
The Student Careers Officer is a member of the Student Services work team and reports to
the Training Manager, Training Services.
External:
The Student Careers Officer liaises with external government agencies, community groups
and industry as required.
3 Special Conditions
Out of Hours Work:
Some out of hours work may be required
Travel:
Some intra/interstate travel and overnight absences may be required.
Location:
Initial appointment will be to the Kadina Campus in the first instance, but
maybe required to relocate/work across other TAFESA Regional Campuses.

Authority
Levels/limits of authority in relation to finance, human resources and administrative requirements are
defined by Departmental delegations and policies.

Statement of Key Responsibilities/Duties
Contribute to the provision of efficient and effective course information and career services by
providing:

a comprehensive career development service including vocational/career services, RPL advice, training
needs analysis and identification of pathways for vocational change;

career advice to students on a range of educational, social and health issues in relation to attending an
educational institution;

mediation and advocacy for student-related grievance and complaints;

fee assistance information to current and prospective students;

assisting students dealing with external agencies;

support to students with a disability by assisting with the development and implementation of
Disability Action Plans;

induction and orientation of students in conjunction with teaching staff to enhance the wellbeing of
students, and a broad range of intervention methodologies to enhance the capacity of students to be
successful in a learning environment;

pastoral support to designated student groups;

comprehensive student case records and statistics.
Contribute to the development and provision of Student Services across the Institute and the
enhancement of professional standards by participating in Institute and TAFE SA networks,
committees, projects and initiatives as appropriate.

7 Position Context

Educational/Vocational Qualifications

Ability to respond effectively with individuals of diverse ages, cultures and socio-economic backgrounds.

Ability to work under limited direction and to meet deadlines and achieve agreed outcomes whilst
working with demanding and competing priorities and as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with students, staff, colleagues and
referral services.
Experience

Demonstrated experience in providing a career development service including the use of career
development tools.

Demonstrated experience in meeting the needs of students at risk, students with disabilities and students
from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Demonstrated experience in working with education and training institutions, government bodies and
service providers.
Knowledge

Sound knowledge of career pathways, career service providers and the impact of current labour market
trends on career direction.

Sound knowledge of applying OHS&W legislative requirements in business activities for which the
position is responsible, whilst ensuring compliance to Agency OHS&IM policies, procedures and
processes.
DESIRABLE CHARACTERISTICS (Maximum of 4 criteria)

Experience

Experience in working within Education or the VET sector.

Experience in use of standard government computer software (including email, word processing,
