The BSc Business Information Systems offered at University College Cork (UCC) is a four-year undergraduate degree program
and is regarded as the premier computing degree in Ireland http://bis.ucc.ie/. This world-class degree program is designed to
provide students with a combination of information systems and business skills, and is the most sought-after computing degree
program in Ireland. A key feature, and integral part, of this program is the paid international business experience at the end of the
third junior year (end of March through August). Every student will have acquired the following skills through their first three years
of study:








Technology including Internet Development (HTML,JavaScript & PHP)
Systems Analysis & Design (Visio)
Software Development (Visual Basic.NET & JAVA)
Database Development (SQL Server & Oracle)
Network Management (Windows & UNIX OS’s)
Managerial & Financial Accounting
Economics
Corporate Finance
This combination of technical and practical business skills gives BIS students the flexibility to work in a variety of technical roles and
in a number of business areas in various sectors such as financial services, software, manufacturing, insurance and pharmaceutical.
BIS has the largest placement program with companies in the United States of any European degree. Our partners in the
United States include: AgencyPort Software, American Tower Corporation, Eaton Vance Management, Federal Reserve Bank of
Boston, Fidelity Investments, Japan Research Institute of America, NaviNet, North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System and
TriZetto.
The experience of partner organisations/companies has been that the students from the BIS degree are among the very best
students that they have employed as Co-ops/Interns in their organisations. They have been particularly impressed by their technical
skills, their understanding of business environments, their work ethic and flexibility.
To date, students have worked in many diverse roles including: Systems Analysis and Design, Business Analysis, Programming,
Testing, Web Development, Network/Systems Administration, Customer Support, Documentation. As an integral part of the degree
program we believe that placement plays a critical part in the development of our students both from a professional and personal
perspective. BIS faculty representatives visit twice while students are on placement thus ensuring the quality of the experience for
all concerned. Students are required to submit a Final Report on their placement experience which accounts for 10% of their
graduation mark.
Offering an internship position to a BIS student is a seamless process from the time resumes are reviewed until the successful
candidate commences their placement. All visa, health insurance, travel and accommodation requirements are organised by Business
Information Systems, UCC.
Placement dates for 2014: 24 March – 29 August. The recommended rate of pay is $20 per hour.
