Changes to Course Approval Policy & CASIMS version 2

Date:

Subject:

At its May meeting, Academic Senate approved significant changes to CSU course approval policies. These are summarised below.

1) Final approval of all coursework course proposals i.e. course approvals, reviews and modifications, will now take place at the Faculty Courses Committee. There will be no need for

Faculty Board or Academic Programs Committee (APC) approval. The APC retains responsibility for overseeing all course accreditation and approval policy, and its members will continue to sit on Faculty Courses Committees, and refer matters to the APC where application of policy in a particular case is unclear.

2) There will no longer be a phase out document for courses. Faculties will, via their Dean, request the phasing out of a course via the UCPC as previously, and following that approval the Office of Academic Governance will set the course to phased out immediately in CASIMS.

Also, where a course approval or course review involves changes that need the approval of the

UCPC, such as changes to modes, locations and funding, this will be handled separately to

CASIMS via the Dean at the UCPC, either before the CASIMS documents have been set up or during their drafting. www.csu.edu.au

Note also that there is no longer a need to produce CASIMS documents for course modifications.

Most Faculties will just use a memo or email describing the modifications, and once approved a central Faculty person will then update the course in CASIMS, and the system will retain a record of what was done. The Faculty Office will be responsible for overseeing and advising on this process in each Faculty.

This means that only course approval and course review documents remain in CASIMS.

To update people on progress with CASIMS version 2, the project has been significantly streamlined and is proceeding well for completion at the end of 2009. Many of the new functions have already been rolled out into CASIMS, and we’ll continue to implement changes progressively rather than in one go at the end. This should minimise the amount of adjustment needed from users.

Please contact the Office of Academic Governance if you need any clarification or further information.
