Southern Medical University
Founded in 1951, Southern Medical University, formerly the First Military Medical University of PLA, was
designated as a national key university in 1978, and in 2006 it was entitled as Chinese Government Scholarship
University by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China. There are more than 13,000
in-campus students, including about 360 international students, studying in 14 subordinate schools of SMU.
Nowadays a discipline layout with stress on medical science and other 6 has been formed in SMU, who grants
bachelor’s degree in 22 subjects and master’s degree as well as doctoral degree in all major medical sciences.
SMU boasts 3 national key disciplines, 3 national key disciplines of Traditional Chinese Medicine, 10 provincial
key disciplines and 12 provincial key labs. It has 1 academician of Chinese Academy of Science, 1 academician
of Chinese Academy of Engineering and more than 900 professors and associate professors. SMU has
established exchange and cooperative relations with universities and institutes in more than 20 countries and
regions, and it has trained foreign students from more than 50 countries. Located in Guangzhou area, the
university has two garden-like campuses with satisfying facilities for living and study. Students from around the
