1. Update on Fall Enrollment & Use of Faculty Positions in Gen Ed

Dean Noble alerted members to the latest forecasts that Fall enrollment figures might be in the neighborhood of 18,000. These forecasts are based on the fact that we have already hit 17% increase compared to this time last year. Chairs are asked to implement Friday, Saturday, and

Sunday classes. Dean Noble stated that she was concerned about faculty’s reactions to this news, especially since the administration promised to manage growth after last fall’s enrollment crisis.

She stated that she would suggest to Dr. Black to send a message to faculty directly.

Regarding new positions approved for Gen Ed, Dr. Dabundo stated that she has completed plans to hire four MA level people to fill these positions for one year to enable her department to conduct a search beginning in Fall 2003. Dean Noble asked chairs to encourage their full time, experienced faculty to teach in the Gen Ed program. Dr. Dabundo asked if there are incentives to offer such faculty to attract them to Gen Ed courses.

2. Institutes & Centers

Institutes and Centers were the subject of Year 2 Program Review. The dean informed chairs that

Dr. Black would like to meet with deans to review the reports and recommendations of the

Program Review Council concerning these centers and institutes. Dr. Ridley will be asked to coordinate the findings of our Centers and attend these meetings for our college with Dean Noble.

The dean also informed chairs that the Dr. Black has accepted the proposal to convert the

International Center to an Institute for Global Initiatives to be directly under the VPAA. The new

Institute will have an Executive Director who will report directly to the VPAA. She clarified that the new Institute will not deliver academic programs, that the Executive Director position is a redefinition of Tom Keene’s position, and that there is potential to house several existing centers

under this Institute. She added that details are still being worked out and that Adebayo has been suggested to assume this position of Executive Director. Dr. Ridley added that there was unanimous support for the proposal among the deans—both for the Institute and for Adebayo as

Executive Director—when Dr. Black presented the proposal at the Dean’s Council earlier that day. The chairs expressed their support for the establishment of the institute and congratulated

Adebayo on the proposed appointment.

Dean Noble informed chairs that CLEC is also being considered to convert into an Institute.

Dr. Rouse asked what’s the difference between a center and an institute? The dean replied that an institute could potentially offer academic programs while a center could not. Dr. Ridley opined that the issue is how an institute is established; for instance, the Center for Conflict Management would like to be elevated into an Institute at some point.

3. Summer Chair Meetings

The next meeting will be the administrative retreat on July 15, 2003. All other scheduled meetings before this date are cancelled.

4. Agenda Items for Retreat

The dean informed chairs that there are several items on her agenda for the retreat. However, they should feel free to send her other agenda items for inclusion.

5. Humanities Addition Plan

Dean Noble reported that there has been progress on the design of the Humanities addition building. It will have 10 classrooms and several shared offices. It will be put on a fast track, which means design and construction will proceed simultaneously. It is expected to be ready by

Fall 2004.

6. Wellstar Gift to HHS and the role of HSS

The dean was pleased to report that Wellstar has given a gift to the College of Health & Human

Services to the tune of $4.8 million. This will support several things on campus, including a

Women Studies position, which will be located in the Department of History & Philosophy. Dr.

Catherine Lewis has been appointed to take this position. The occupant of this distinguished scholar position will be 50% teaching, 25% directing the Anne Frank exhibit, and 25% working on Women’s programs at the CAREing Center. Dean Noble said she was especially pleased that this position might help us revive our women’s studies program. She expressed her appreciation for the gift.

7. Update on Chinese MPA Cohort

Dr. Li reported that there has been progress on the proposal for the Executive MPA for a cohort of 32 Chinese officials this fall. He said the contract was approved by the BOR. The next step is to process the officials’ applications for admission. Dean Noble described the program as “a great opportunity” for our college. There was some discussion on the ESL piece and housing.

8. Equity Adjustment Requests by July 14th

Dean Noble reminded chairs that these requests are due by July 14 th

.

9. Other

The dean thanked Dr. Patrick Devine and Dr. Thierry Leger for their leadership and service as interim chairs of the Department of Psychology and Department of Foreign Languages respectively.

The meeting adjourned at 4:00 p.m.

Next meeting: Retreat on Tuesday, July 15, 2003 on Dr. Ridley’s houseboat.

Respectfully submitted
