Placement F1 Medicine – Respiratory The department The type of work to expect and learning opportunities Busy 27 bed cardio-respiratory unit with non-invasive ventilation and tracheostomy beds All F1 Doctors in hospital posts will generally be ward based during the ‘normal’ working day and expected to deliver the daily medical care of all the patients on their ward irrespective of specialty. The overall educational objectives of the F1 year are to provide the trainee with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to be able to Take a history and examine a patient Identify and synthesize problems Prescribe safely Keep an accurate and relevant medical record Manage time and clinical priorities effectively Communicate effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues Use evidence, guidelines and audit to benefit patient care Act in a professional manner at all times Cope with ethical and legal issues which occur during the management of patients with general medical problems Educate patients effectively Become life-long learners and teachers Trainees are closely supervised and expected to adhere to high standards of medical competence. Trainees are expected to follow guidance on maintaining core medical knowledge and comply with infection control and aseptic practices. Trainees work closely with members the MDT. Teaching will be provided during consultant ward rounds, and from other more senior doctors. Services available include angiography/angioplasty at the Silver Heart Unit at Rochdale, on site Echocardiography and ETT. No duty to CCU patients but is good experience to spend some time there. Opportunities to go to clinic/SHU/theatre to observe.
