POST ANESTHETIC CARE UNIT NURSE
 obtain baseline and frequent assessment of the patient’s oxygen
saturation, pulse volume and regularity, depth and nature of respiration,
skin color, level of consciousness, and ability to respond to commands
 check the surgical site for drainage or hemorrhage and connecting all
drainage tubes and monitoring lines
 monitorvital signs and assesses the patient’s general physical status at
least every 15 minutes (or as ordered) including assessment of
cardiovascular functions with above assessments after initial assessment
has been done
 maintain airway patency and supplemental oxygen
 maintain cardiodsvascular stability with prevention, prompt recognition,
and treatment of hemorrhage, hypertension, dysrrhythmias, hypotension
and shock
 relieve patient’s pain and anxiety and controls nausea and vomiting with
the safe and appropriate administration of medication as per physicians
order
 note any pertinent information from the patient’s history that may be
significant (eg, hard of hearing, history of seizures, diabetes, allergies to
certain medications or other substances)
 ensure the patient’s readiness for discharge from the PACU to room with
the following:
 uncompromised pulmonary function
