F2 Breast Surgery ELHT
The dept Breast Surgery comprises
of 3 specialist breast and oncoplastic
surgeons (who do not do general
surgery on call) and one general
surgeon with a breast interest.
The breast unit offers both a
symptomatic and screening service
to a population of half a million. We
work very closely as a
multidisciplinary team with radiology,
histopathology and oncology and
have good links with the plastic
surgeons based in Preston.
The F2 placement is with the 3
specialist breast surgeons and
comprises of elective breast work at
Burnley General Hospital with acute
general surgery on call at the Royal
Blackburn Site. Some on call time is
spent doing ward cover at the non
acute BGH site.
Elective work consist mainly of
supporting and advising the F1’s on
the wards, developing teaching and
leadership skills. Seeing and
assessing new and follow up
patients in breast clinics, developing
diagnositic and decision making
skills as well as learning about the
use and interpretation of guidelines
and developing communication
skills. Opportunities to attend some
breast radiology sessions in clinics.
Attending theatre sessions with the
consultants/middle grades where
there are opportunities to learn
hands on skills such as suturing knot
tying and some surgical techniques if
interested. F2’s normally attend
teaching on a Tuesday pm and so
