Dear Parents/Carers,
We are now almost at the end of our first term – time really has flown in
this session. The children and staff have been working extremely hard as
always. The school has been particularly busy with a whole host of
activities and learning opportunities that have ensured your children have
been taking their learning forward in a meaningful and relevant manner in
line with the new Curriculum for Excellence.
Staffing Issues
As you are aware, I will shortly be taking up a new post as Crossgates PS
headteacher. However, as yet I have not been advised as to when this will take place,
though it is likely that this will not be until after Christmas. I will be consulting with
the Parent Council and will, of course, keep you all informed of any decisions that are
made.
We have welcomed new members of staff this term; Mrs K. Henderson, Class
Teacher in P3/4, has taken up Mrs Hannah’s post. Mrs G. MacDonald, Classroom
Assistant, has taken up Mr Hull’s post and Miss J. Lindsay has been sharing the P5/6
class with Mrs Penman on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Mrs G Reid has joined us
as Teacher of the Deaf. We are delighted that our new staff members have joined our
team and settled into the school so well.
After the October holidays we will be welcoming our new Nursery Teacher Miss
Lauren Liddell, which means that Mrs Penman will return to her P5/6 class full time.
We have also welcomed three new pupils into our school community, Jaime in P3,
Leila in P.5, Reece in P6 and Rhiannon in P7. They have all settled in extremely quickly
and we are sure they will be happy in Saline PS.
Visitors into School
Mrs Martin, Drama teacher, will be working with all classes until February half term
break.
P1 children had their photograph taken by the Dunfermline Press.
P2/3 had a visit from the Fire Brigade.
P5 have been working with SAMBA Source on their Samba band.
Mr Forster has been training the P6 and P7 children in hockey.
P6 and P7 pupils have started to learn Mandarin!
Visits out of School
P6 and P7 children spent a day at Gleneagles watching the Johnnie Walker Cup.
P6 and P7 had a fantastic outdoor experience challenge at Fordell Firs.
Some P6 and P7 children have been learning how to ski.
A group of senior Saline PS pupils will be representing the school at the annual
“Enterprise is the Business” competition at Dunfermline High School.
Health Promoting Schools
Miss Donaldson and the Health committee were successful in gaining Health
Promoting Schools Phase 3 status for our school. This is a fantastic achievement , so
very well done to everyone involved! This year the Health Committee are taking on
the School Travel Plan, Walk to School Week, Junior Road Safety Officer training and
other road safety issues.
This Friday (tomorrow) the Health Committee have decided to organise a “Be Bright,
Be Seen” day to raise awareness of our Walk to School month activities.
Pupil Council
As always, the Pupil Council have wasted no time in getting involved in the decision
making processes of the school. We have many new Pupil Council members and
already we have discussed a number of issues such as after school clubs, golden time
activities and this term’s Scores on the Doors target and theme.
School Improvements
You will now have seen our new spelling programme and Personal Learning
Plans/Learning Logs. We have already started to make some small changes from
feedback given this term and will be asking for more parental views next term.
This session we will be looking at renewing our Environmental Studies programme and
bringing it into line with Curriculum for Excellence. We will also be thinking about
how we can best assess the children’s progress through the new curriculum.
Achievements
The Pupil Council organised a very successful “dress down” day last month in aid of
the Pakistan Floods appeal, raising a fantastic sum of £350 In addition to this, one of
our parents, Mrs Ali, kindly offered to do Henna tattoos for the children. This proved
extremely popular. Many thanks to Mrs Ali for giving up her time.
Family Finish/Assemblies
Our recent Harvest Assembly was the first to be attended by parents as part of our
Family Finish activities. This was extremely successful and I am sure the children got a
lot out of having their parents in school whilst celebrating their successes at Assembly.
I do hope that parents and carers will be able to join us at future assemblies
throughout this session. Family Finish 3 will take place at 2.40pm in the classrooms
this Friday.
Harvest Appeal
A representative from the charity LEPRA spoke with the children about the work they
do and launched our Harvest Appeal recently. They will be returning this Friday to
collect any donation envelopes and all pupils will take part in a fun fitness work out as
a reward.
After School/Lunchtime Clubs
The Bridge, Dance and Drama lunchtime clubs have started up again this term. The
Pupil Council has been asking the children which clubs they would like to have this
session and all class teachers will be offering either an after school or lunchtime club
for pupils throughout the year. Details regarding clubs will be sent out next term.
Parent Council and PTA
The Parent Council and PTA have met earlier this term - please see minutes in the
main hallway. We are, as always, looking for more parents and carers to become
involved. Mrs Bagnall is the chair of the PTA and should be contacted if you wish to
know more about the work of the group.
The PTA are busily organising the Christmas Bazaar which as you can imagine is an
enormous task. All offers of help would be gratefully received.
Infection Control
We continue to have procedures in place regarding infection control. This is
particularly important as the winter draws nearer. We are always looking for
donations of tissues, hand gel and antibacterial wipes or soap.
All that remains now is to wish you all a well earned, relaxing October break.
School reopens on Monday 1st November at 8.55am.
Warmest regards,
Ms R. Delargy
Headteacher
P1 have been learning about people who help us in school.
They talked to Mrs Fox and Mrs MacDonald, our Classroom Assistants, about their jobs.
