Derbyshire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education
2014 – 2019
Religious education provides rich opportunities for children to learn about things that matter in the lives of many people in the local area and wider world. This
syllabus sets up RE so that pupils study beliefs, teachings and ways of living and so that they can explore a range of responses to questions of identity,
meaning, purpose, values and commitments. In the process they can examine and reflect upon their own ideas and values.
Aims and purpose of RE:
 Promote spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and society
 Prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life
RE enables pupils to:
 Answer thought provoking questions about the purpose of life
 Develop pupils knowledge and understanding of principle religions
 Enhances pupils awareness and understanding of religious beliefs, practices and foems of expression
 Encourages pupils to learn from different religions
 Challenges pupils to reflect on, consider, analyse and interpret information
 Encourages pupils to develop their sense of identity and belonging
 Encourages pupils to flourish individually
 Enables pupils to develop respect for and sensitivity to others
