F2 Vascular Surgery
The department
The Vascular Surgery department is a regional
referral centre for North West Thames and is a
National referral centre for specialist conditions
such as thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysms.
The department is staffed by 11 consultant
vascular surgeons.

The type of work to expect and
learning opportunities
The department has a specialist interest in
aneurysm surgery, carotid surgery, diabetic foot
disease and venous disease.
The department manages its own 5 bedded
HDU unit, giving unique learning opportunities.
In particular the department receives patients to
be considered for thoracoabdominal aneurysm
surgery from around the UK.
In research the department is internationally
renowned for its clinical and research based
publications on technology, simulation and error
in surgery.
The department is strongly involved in the
teaching programme of undergraduates and
hosts a number of postgraduate specialist
courses
The overall educational objectives of the F2
year are to provide the trainee with the
knowledge, skills and attitudes to be able to: 


Take a history and examine a patient in
the elective and emergency setting
Gain experience in an HDU setting
Identify and synthesise problems










Main duties of the placement
To manage elective and emergency patients on
the ward including HDU, with the support of
senior staff
The consultants are divided roughly into 2
separate teams, red and blue.
Blue team:

Mr Ian Franklin
Mr Michael Jenkins
Mr David Nott
There are 7x F1s, 5x F2s.
4x F1s and 3x F2s for red team, 3x F1s and 2x
F2s for blue team.
F1s are expected to cover all ward duties. This
includes jobs generated from the ward round.
They also clerk in elective patients and help in
the pre-operative assessment clinic (which is on
the ward) on a daily basis
F2s are responsible for the vascular HDU
cover. They also cover clinics and are expected
to help in theatre.
Typical working pattern in this Everyday there is a ward round by the
placement
consultant of the week at 0800 and another
board round at 1600. All patients on HDU,
Zachary Cope and Samuel Lane wards are
seen.
There is also a registrar of the week rota

Fri: 0930 MDT meeting (SHOs have
responsibility to prepare a case on each patient
for this meeting)
On call requirements:
F2s carry the bleep. This covers HDU duties
and answer to referrals from A+E
F2 at night also covers the major trauma ward
