Mission Statement
Students completing a course or courses of foreign language study in the schools located
with in the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas will demonstrate course-appropriate
outcomes in the four basic language skills of speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and
writing. Students will also gain an awareness and appreciation of other cultures in order to
better participate in an ever-changing global society.

Forward
The purpose of this instructional booklet is to provide elementary and middle Spanish
teachers with a sound and flexible curriculum that provides a strong foundation for future
study of Spanish. After successfully completing eight years of Spanish study, students will
be prepared for high school Spanish.

topics that need to be covered.

Implementing K-8 Spanish Curriculum
The foreign language SAC members offer the following suggestions when implementing
foreign language instruction.
1. Offer the foreign language with a minimum of 2 days per week for 15-45 minutes each
day depending on grade level.
2. Use multimedia computers and appropriate language software programs that offer oral
and written instruction.
3. If possible, have the classroom teacher reinforce the lesson on the days there is no
foreign language teacher.

Kindergarten Expectations
1st Quarter
1. Students will recite simple Spanish greetings.
2. Students will recognize and recite 10 colors.
3. Students will recognize and recite the numbers 1-10.
4. Students will recite a number song.
2nd Quarter
1. Students will continue to pronounce and identify colors.
2. Students will recognize and recite numbers 11-20.
3. Students will recite Holiday words. (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas)
4. Students will recite Spanish Birthday Song (Cumpleaños Feliz).
3rd Quarter
1. Students will recite the Sign of the Cross.
2. Students will pronounce and identify Opposites.
3. Students will explain and retell aspects of the Spanish culture.
4. Students will sing in Spanish.
4th Quarter

1st Quarter

5. Student will recite the Hail Mary in Spanish (all year).
2nd Quarter

2. Student will correctly change singular adjectives and nouns to plural forms.
3. Student will discuss in Spanish the things they need and want for their classes.
4. Student will compare differences and similarities of Christmas celebrations among Latin
American countries and the United States.

Sixth Grade Expectations
1st Quarter
1. Student will recite the Hail Mary in Spanish (all year).
2. Student will use Spanish to describe class schedule using sequencing words.
3. Students will describe the education system in Spanish-speaking countries (classes,
schedule, grading).
4. Student will explain All Saint’s Day celebrations in South America.
2nd Quarter
1. Student will review all Spanish numbers up to a million.
2. Student will tell time.
3. Students will participate in a special mass in celebration of our Lady of Guadalupe by
reading parts of the mass in Spanish.
4. Student will describe cultural knowledge of the siesta concept, family meal times in
Spanish-speaking countries, as well Christmas celebrations in South America.
3rd Quarter
1. Student will speak in Spanish what time something happens and about being late or in a
hurry.
2. Student will correctly use the possessive –de and the verb ser orally and in writing when
telling time.
3. Students will locate countries in a map of South America
4. Student will describe the culture of one South American country.
4th Quarter
