The Big Lunch Schools Resources – Key Stage 2, Activity 2
Learning objectives – understand why communities are important by creating a
community event and presenting it to the rest of the class
Resources and preparation
 What’s On grid – blank per group (Task Sheet 1)
 Special Day information for pupils to look through
 Time Together table (Task Sheet 2)
 Set up themed tables (music, food, art and crafts …)
Introduction

Explain to pupils that they will be creating a new community event for their local area:
first they will research, then they will plan, then they will present their idea. The class
then votes on their favourite

What already happens in the community? Elicit a few examples, then students use
local newspapers, websites and knowledge to write a list of events in a blank ‘What’s
On’ calendar (Task Sheet 1)

Pupils then decide what month and what group of people is in most need of a
community gathering.
Main

In groups – pupils look through their Special Day information and complete the Time
Together table (Task Sheet 2), they then feed back to the rest of the class on what
makes a ‘special’ day (eg. song, clothes, food)

If needed allocate subject to each group for them to work on for their own special
gathering eg. local celebrity, saint, inventor, poet etc (homework from lesson before
could have been to research these areas or use earlier part of the lesson to do so)

Pupils should decide what month and begin to plan their event using another Time
Together information table

Teacher sets up themed tables to help pupils ‘design’ elements of their day: clothing
and costume table (masks, hats, props, pupils can make their own); food table with
recipe books and drawing/painting resources; music/dance area with percussion
instruments etc

Pupils then use format of Pretend Event (Task Sheet 3) to present their day to the rest
of the class
Plenary

Pupils listen to each others’ ideas (reiterate listening skills) and are encouraged to ask
questions; pupils then vote on the event they would like most to happen
Extension – research and present a
different special day that already exists
Homework – describe or write up a recent
special event that you have been to
