WAWNE PRIMARY SCHOOL
School Visitors Policy
Introduction
Wawne Primary School encourages visitors and sees the benefits which can result from
engagement with parents and members of the local and wider community. The School
recognises that the benefits of receiving visitors must be balanced with other considerations
such as disruption to the academic day and the safety and welfare of pupils and staff. Our
desire is to achieve this balance, leading to increased parental and community involvement
and developing the school’s work and understanding of community cohesion.
The Head teacher has the authority to determine which visits will be of benefit to the pupils,
the staff and to the visitors. In order to do this the Head teacher will consider the purpose of
the visit, the impact of the visit and the impact this may have on the organisation of the
school.
All visitors must adhere to guidance laid down by the school in order to ensure all
Safeguarding and Health and Safety issues are addressed.
All visitors will be welcomed, provided with clear guidance and information and assisted
with any other requests.
It is hoped that the guidance and support offered to visitors will help to foster long term,
positive relationships between school, our parents and the wider community.

Visitors to School- Information and Administration
A visitor to the school can be any person who is not an employee or pupil at the school.
All visitors must report to the main office reception desk when arriving at school. They will
be requested to sign in, gain authorisation and be given an identification badge to wear.
When a visitor leaves the school they must sign out and return the badge.
On some occasions prior authorisation may be required from the Head teacher. Visits may
not always be authorised due to circumstances in school, such as SAT’s testing times.
Exceptions
Occasionally the school holds ‘Open Afternoon/ Evenings. Parent consultations and parent
information meetings. During these times the above procedures do not apply.
Visits to Classrooms
A visitor requires access to classrooms on certain occasions. During these times, following
the authorisation from the Head teacher, they must adhere to basic rules in order that the
class is not unduly disrupted and the pupils academic progress is not affected.
 Visitors will have a designated seat and must remain that seat unless requested by
class teacher
 Visitors must not speak to pupils whilst a session is being delivered
 Visitors must not leave and return
 Visitors must adhere to all class and school codes of behaviour
 Visitors must follow directions offered by class teacher.
 Visitors must not enter other classrooms
Any visitors wishing to speak to teachers must do so outside of teaching times. As a general
rule parents are encouraged not to meet teachers at the beginning of the day as this disrupts
the start of the lesson for pupils.
From Year 1 parents are encouraged not to accompany their children into the classroom and
wherever possible the cloakroom.
Student/ Pupil Visitors
All procedures for adult visitors also apply for student and pupils visitors.
Special Circumstances
Custodial and non custodial parents have a right to visit the school and receive information
unless a court order exists. If a non- custodial parent visits the school we will make every
effort to notify the custodial parent.
Exclusion from Premises
The Head teacher has the authority to exclude from the school premises any person who
disrupts or is violent / abusive to staff and pupils.
DBS Checking
All volunteer helpers must have a valid DBS check. These are reviewed every three years.
Visitors on a non routine basis do not require a DBS, but will be accompanied at all times.
All volunteers unless they are parents are asked to complete an application form.
