Getting your child
back into
education
A guide for Parents and
Carers
You have a legal responsibility under
the Education Act 1996, to ensure that
your child receives a suitable education
appropriate to their age and ability.
This may be at school or you have the
right to educate your child “Otherwise”.
The Children and Young People’s
Directorate (CYPD) may take legal
action against parents/carers who fail
to meet this responsibility.
Each day your child spends out of education
they are missing out on the valuable
learning opportunities and the foundations
for a brighter future. Getting your child back
into a normal routine, and back into
educational provision is essential.
How can we help you?
The Children Missing from Education Team
(CME Team) is part of the Children and
Young People’s Directorate (CYPD). The
team provides advice & support to parents
and carers who have children (of school
age) who are ‘not on a roll at a school’; for
example, families who have recently moved
to Sheffield.
By working with parents/carers and schools
the CME Team makes sure that your child
will get the educational opportunities that
they need.
For a few children, school may not be
appropriate. In these situations we can
inform parents/carers on other alternatives
to school.
Securing a place for your child at
school:
The following steps outline what you need
to do to get a place at a school in
Sheffield. There are a few schools who
manage their own admissions procedures;
details can be found by contacting Pupil
Admissions on 2735766 or 2735790.
1. A parent/carer must complete an
application form for admission to a
school for each child. On the form
they will indicate the ‘preferred
school’ they would like their child
to attend. (These forms are
available from any school or by
telephoning Pupil Admissions).
2. The form is given (by hand) or
posted to the preferred school.
Remember; an application should
be submitted to the school even if
it is full.
3. If the school has a place in the
appropriate year group they must
comply with parental preference
and offer the place to the child for
whom the application has been
made. There are only a few
exceptions.
4. If the school is full or unable to
accept the child they will return the
admission form to the LEA with
their reasons within 10 days.
5. The CYPD will then write to
parents/carer, giving them legal
right of appeal against the decision
and inform them of alternative
schools.
DID YOU KNOW? ‘A parent may apply
to more than one school at the same time’
Other CYPD services
Every child is unique and some may
require access to specialist provision or
services. There are a number of services
provided by the CYPD to support these
children. The CME Team will work closely
with you and any other agencies to
improve your child’s learning. These
agencies could include:
 Special Educational Needs
 New Arrivals Team
 Traveller Education Service
 Extended Curriculum Team
 Vulnerable Children’s Team
 Children Educated at home by
parents (CEAHP)
