Geographic Overview
• Location: Shore of Carigara Bay, Northern Leyte Island, Eastern
Visayas Region, approximately 54km from Tacloban City
• Surrounding Area: Wide rice fields fanning out towards
mountains in the distance
• Political boundaries: Carigara is a second-class municipality
subdivided into 49 barangays
• Population: 47,444 (2010 Census)
• Population Density: 400 people per square kilometer
• Number of Households: Approximately 10,094
• Primary Industries: Agriculture, fishing, and commercial or
service centers
Damage Assessment
• Reported Casualties: Carigara Mayor confirmed on 10 NOV 9 dead and 97 injured
• Damaged Households: ~15% partially damaged, ~85% totally damaged
• Damage cost estimates: Government properties/infrastructures ~P800 million, households
~300 million, agriculture ~P100 million
• Metro Carigara Water District services were restored at around 1:00 PM 8 NOV 2013
• Reporting from 16 NOV indicates that damage assessments are requested and payment for

Transportation
Road sections are now cleared from debris and open for public
vehicles.
Public Works and the Highways Secretary said other government
agencies will be able to provide the necessary assistance now that
clearing operations are complete, particularly to the areas that
were temporarily isolated.
A few days following the flood, there had been reports of the NPA
blocking aid vehicles from progressing towards the affected areas
near Carigara. However, the claims were later determined to be
unfounded.
Current Relief Support
Carigara Evacuation Centers – Two shelters
Small grassroots aid organizations have recently been reported in the Carigara Area to distribute supplies including:
• Iglesia Ni Cristo – Arrived 17 NOV 2013, religious organization from Cebu City
• Bulig Para Cigara – Residents in Cebu City collecting donations made a delivery on 16 NOV with PA escort. Currently
preparing for a second shipment
