What is culture?

‘Culture is the pattern of thinking, feeling and
reacting of a particular group. The essential
core of culture consists of traditional ideas and
especially values.’

• Behavior makes sense when you understand the value or
belief behind it.

• Cultural concepts are ‘general’ and do not necessarily apply
to all members.

Change is valued only if it doesn’t conflict with tradition

Difficult to take people away from their ‘comfort zones’; complacency

Expressing Emotions-
แสดงออกของความรู้ สึก
How do you express your joys or your sorrows?

Controlling emotion is seen as normal adult behavior
สามารถควบคุมอารมณ์ ตนเองได้ ถอื ว่าเป็ นผู้ใหญ่
Showing emotion may be a sign of weakness

People who are unexpressive are often viewed as dishonest, uncaring
or cold-hearted

Based on hierarchy; once face is lost, it is difficult to regain

Take great care not to cause others to lose face

Think before you speak and speak
diplomatically or tactfully to satisfy both sides or parties
Not so important what other people think of you; direct and honest is best

“Forgive and forget”; you can always apologize if you break face

Egalitarian society; everyone has equal rights
