Pericles’ Funeral
Oration
Students
will understand the
significance of citizenship
through Pericles’ Funeral
Oration
 The
idea that people were citizens with rights and
responsibilities set Greece apart from other parts of
the world.
 The Greeks began to give ordinary people the right to
take part in government affairs.
 Once a year in ancient Athens, the city came together
to honor her sons who had fallen in battle.
 In 431 B.C., that duty fell to Pericles

The famous Greek general, Pericles, gave a public speech
honoring Athenians who died in war. This famous speech is
called his funeral oration. This speech talked about
Athenian patriotism and government.

Fortunately, this speech was written down. It told scholars a
great deal about life and events in ancient Greece.

Pericles was a great believer in democracy which we will
talk more about on Thursday. Moreover, his ideas, and his
speech led to democracy being possible
This
was important because he highlighted
that everyone had a part to play in the war.
Pericles stressed that people needed to
band together as Athenians in order for
them to win the long war they were part of.
He stressed that their participation was a
responsibility

 The
assignment is to write a speech
highlighting the responsibilities of students
within our school
o Be sure to acknowledge specific people and
their accomplishments
o Be positive, yelling at people rarely makes
them react positively
o You’re trying to motivate others!
o This is Due on Thursday and must be at
least 3 paragraphs long!

It began in a small school in the heart of Los Angeles. Students
from the surrounding neighborhoods came together to change the
course of their education. Parents who cared deeply for their
students sought to give them a better life. Students showed up
ready to work hard. Under the leadership of dedicated
administrators like Ms. Vallejo and a group of hard working
teachers, students learned that their education was in their hands.
But why? Why would this be important? Students like Armando had
excellent attendance and Daisy came prepared with a good
attitude. Students like Joanna and Irvin made flashcards and
Kyerah took initiative to do well and ask questions. Students,
parents, and teachers were committed to students success.
Because of this I am confident that you can not only succeed here,
but in your high school, college and future careers!
