The Internet of Things
Opportunities for senior design projects
2014-2015 academic year
What is the IoT?
 Pretty soon, EveryThing will have an IP address.





Household appliances
Thermostats (e.g., Nest)
Wearable computing
Vehicles
Farm crops and animals
 30B devices by 2020
 Need for IPv6
 Low-cost platforms
Example Applications
 Wireless sensing
 Environmental monitoring.
 Infrastructure monitoring (smart bridges).
 Logistics
 Instant inventory control.
 Amazon on wheels
 Fleet monitoring
 taxi, bus, trucks, rental cars.
 Energy management
 Scheduling of appliances
 smart grid
 Servitization models
 Example: As an alternative to selling jet engines, Rolls offers
“power by the hour” providing a fully serviced solution.

Platforms for sensors
 Software framework
 Environment for developing IoT applications.
 Back-end processing for running the application.
 User interface
 Hosted on a PC or mobile device.
ThingWorx
 ThingWorx is an enablement
platform that lets you build an
IoT application.
 It will be made available in a
hosted environment.
 Programmed via Java snippets.
 Search people, systems, and
machines to find what you want,
when you need it.
 Video tutorials available.
IoT-Enabled Apps
 ThingWorx can be used to create the user interface.
 Support for mobile devices
Raspberry Pi
 IoT requires low-cost computing
platforms.
 The group should use the
Raspberry Pi as the platform for
its sensors.
 Supported sensors:






Temperature
Humidity
Motion
Accelerometer
Light
EKG
 Can bind the data to ThingWorx
Thingz to Think About ...
 Concept: What is the goal of the app? Who is the
user? The customer? How will they use it? What is its
Business Model and value proposition? Are there
partners needed?
 Inputs: What Data Is Collected? What is the Source of
this Data? What kinds of sensors are needed?
 Outputs: What Alerts are Triggered? What are the
Responses to the Alerts? What kind of data analytics is
needed. How to interface with the user to make the
data actionable.
