What is the Record of School Achievement ?

a new cumulative credential replacing the School Certificate

awarded to students who leave school after completing Stage 5 but before
completing the HSC

shows a student’s achievements up until they leave school

based on moderated, school-based assessments

offers voluntary literacy and numeracy tests for students leaving school

offers optional reporting of extracurricular achievements
Who is likely to need the new Record of
School Achievement?

around 18% of students leave school without the HSC

of those:




60% are male
72% are from government schools
57% are from country areas
at least 10 000 students per year start Year 11 but
leave before getting their HSC
Who gets a Record of School
Achievement?

students who are eligible and leave school before receiving the
HSC

a student receiving the HSC can also request a copy of their
Record of School Achievement

students in Year 11 or 12 not leaving school can access a
transcript to use when seeking casual work (not an official
credential)
Reporting measures

for a student who has completed Year 10 and is leaving school, the
Record of School Achievement will show a grade of A to E for all
courses a student has satisfactorily completed

these grades will be:



based on how a student has performed in assessment tasks
monitored by the Board of Studies
submitted by the school to the Board of Studies on 30 November for every
Year 10 student

Reporting measures
For an eligible student leaving at the end of Year 11, the Record
of School Achievement in 2013 will show:


an A to E grade
these grades also will be

based on assessment tasks

monitored by the Board of Studies

submitted by the school to the Board of Studies at the end of October
for Year 11 students who complete Preliminary courses

extended from the current system used for Year 10 students
Reporting measures –
Vocational Education and Training (VET)
VET achievements are referenced on the Record of School
Achievement
Students will continue to receive additional VET credentials
Reporting measures – Life Skills
The Profile of Student Achievement provides details on Life Skills
syllabus outcomes achieved by students
Reporting measures
Grades are to be submitted for all Year 10 students starting in
2012 and Year 11 students starting in 2013 – irrespective of
whether or not they leave school prior to completing the HSC
Reporting measures
Grades will not be shown for partial completion of Year
10 or 11 courses
For students who leave before completing the full
Preliminary or HSC course, their document will show the:
courses they have attempted
 date of leaving school

Stronger school-based judgements

build on the experience of teachers setting and grading Year 10
assessments

The Record of School Achievement extends that process to Year
11

Board to offer support for teacher professional judgement:


professional development to help teachers understand grade standards
assessment materials published in Assessment Resources Centre (ARC)

Voluntary literacy/numeracy tests
These are voluntary tests
employers
have supported this measure as important in their
assessment of potential job candidates
tests
will be online and taken during nominated windows
throughout the year, eg November 2012

students can receive their Record of School Achievement if they
choose not to take the tests
Reporting additional achievements

students will record achievements within existing merit frameworks
and may provide evidence of these achievements

students can record other achievements that may not provide
certification and may provide evidence of these achievements

it is voluntary for students

an online tool has been developed known as ‘up2now: my ongoing
learning portfolio’

a pilot is being conducted this year using ‘up2now’
Issuing the Record of School Achievement

not issued at a single point in time

schools continue to assess in Years 10 – 12 as required

school reports grades to the Board for Stage 5 (Year 10 courses) in 2012
and for Preliminary (Year 11) courses as of 2013

these grades are kept by the Board until a student chooses to leave

Principal informs the Board when the student intends to leave school

Board issues the Record of School Achievement to eligible students

Important dates for schools
Board consults and develops:







generic A to E grade descriptors developed and published for Stage 6
(Preliminary)
assessment materials provided to support Year 10 grades
Term 3 – Board provides historical grade ranges to schools
November 30 – schools provide Year 10 grades to Board
December – grades finalised
end 2012 – first Record of School Achievement (RoSA) is issued to
eligible students

mandatory curriculum pattern of study and minimum
requirements

non-government registration and accreditation requirements

end date of school for Year 10 students

start date for HSC studies

reporting of Life Skills outcomes
