Why ValuES?
 Several targets of the CBD Strategic Plan 2011-2020



call for mainstreaming the value and benefits of
ecosystem services, and the development of the
capacity to do so.
Need to create evidence, improve negotiations and
increase the quality and impacts of policies and
measures
Practitioners have difficulties to access, select and
use ESAV methods at practical level.
ESAV results are rarely integrated into decision
making and political processes at the national or
local level.

An ecosystem services approach
seeks to integrate ecosystem
services into decision-making by
(a) Understanding people’s
dependence and impact on the
services provided by ecosystems
and
(b) applying policy mechanisms that
incorporate ecosystem service
values into decision-making at all
levels.
Ecosystem services approach
We need to look beyond particular
species and consider the functioning
of an ecosystem as a whole
(systems thinking).
