Introduction
Jay McCreary
Summer School on:
Dynamics of the North Indian Ocean
National Institute of Oceanography
Dona Paula, Goa
June 17 – July 29, 2010
Goal
To provide a comprehensive introduction of ocean
dynamics in the North Indian Ocean (NIO), that
is, of the processes that maintain NIO circulations
and cause their variability on all time scales.
Topics
1) Observations
2) Ocean models (OGCMs, LCS &
layer models; model hierarchy)
3) Analytic and numerical methods
4) Processes (idealized solutions)
5) Applications (realistic solutions)
Course Notes
1) HIG Notes (NOTE: σ → –σ)
2) Math Notes
3) Interior-ocean Notes
4) Equatorial-ocean Notes
5) Coastal-ocean Notes
Tomorrow, we begin to discuss ocean model. For the LCS
model, please read HIG pp.1–17, INT Problem #2. For the
1½-layer model, please read INT Problem #1a.
Thoughts (1)
Only a start
At the end of this course, you will have learned a lot
about NIO dynamics. But, it is impossible to cover
everything about the NIO in this short time. So, the talks
are intended to provide introductions to various topics of
NIO dynamics, which will then make it easier for you to
study further.
Mathematics
Some mathematical techniques are needed to obtain
analytical solutions. Several mathematical lectures are
included to introduce the techniques that are used.
Thoughts (2)
Fast pace
Given the time limits of the course, we will be going at a
fast pace. So, please keep up with the material as best as
you can. Also, please do not get discouraged, as ideas
introduced earlier in the course will be reinforced later.
Discussion
Although these talks are called “lectures,” they are
meant to be “discussions.” So, ask questions and bring
up issues at any time during the presentations.
Mistakes
I often make mistakes, both in speaking and (likely) in
the slides. Please bring any errors to our attention as soon
as you notice them.
