What is Summer Residential
Governor School?

Provides gifted high school sophomores and juniors
with intensive educational experiences in visual and
performing arts; humanities; mathematics, science,
and technology; agriculture, or through mentorships
in marine science , NASA/Engineering, or Medicine &
Health Sciences.

Students live on a college or university campus for up
to four weeks each summer.

Involved in classroom and laboratory work, field
studies, research, individual and group projects and
performances, and seminars with noted scholars,
visiting artists, and other professionals.

Mentorships - Work side-by-side with research
scientists, physicians, and a variety of other
professionals.
Three Types of Applications

Academic Application – complete this
application for the Agriculture program, the
Humanities program, and the Math, Science,
and Technology program

Mentorship Application – complete this
application for the Medicine & Health
Sciences and the NASA/Engineering and
Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS)
programs

Visual and Performing Arts Application –
complete this application for all of the
subcategories of the Visual and Performing
Arts program (dance, instrumental music,
theatre, visual arts, and vocal music)
Eligibility Criteria

Strong Academic Standing

Two forms of Aptitude tests

Two letter of recommendations

A student must be neither a current applicant to a 2014
Governor's Foreign Language Academy or other
Summer Residential Governor’s School, nor a former
participant in these programs. A student may attend
only one Foreign Language Academy or Summer
Residential Governor’s School program during his
or her high school career.

A student must be genuinely interested in attending the
Governor's School and have the emotional maturity,
stability, and self-discipline to live away from home for
an extended period.
 Once selected, a student MUST attend Governor
School.

In order to receive a Governor’s School
certificate, students are required to be in
attendance from the opening ceremony on
June 22 through the closing ceremony on July
19.


If nominated for any of the VPA category –
Students will go through adjudication
process.

