Francois de Laval was the
first Roman Catholic
bishop of New France
His power and authority
were established with help
from King Louis XIV
He founded the Seminary
of Quebec and the
Sovereign Council


The Seminary of
Quebec was founded
by de Laval. He
recruited a bunch of
diocesan priests for
the training of new
priests

priests that are under
the authority of the
Bishop


The Sovereign
Council was the
name for the
government of
New France
It made rules and
enacted laws
concerning the
day-to-day affairs
of the colony

The sovereign
council of New
France consisted of a
Governor General,
the First Intendant of
New France, the
Bishop, the Captain
of the Militia, and
five other councillors



Jean Talon was First
Intendant of New France
His main job was to help
populate New France,
which he did very well
through various methods
Jean Talon brought “les
filles du roilles” (the king’s
daughters) to New France


He attempted to boost
the economy in New
France by helping start
industries in
agriculture, fishing,
and lumbering, as well
as the traditional fur
trade
However, most of
these failed once he
left for France


“Les Filles du
Roilles” is French for
“the King’s
Daughters
They were single
attractive girls
brought to New
France in order to
intermarry with the
men and so boost the
population
They weren’t literally the
king’s daughters

The French
government then
sponsored them to
settle and populate
New France. Soon
after this 713
daughters were
married in New
France; mainly to
farmers and
soldiers

Most of the women
were from poor
families, it seemed
most people moved to
the new world to
escape their past debts
or in hopes of
changing their fortune.


Many years later,
approximately 300 more
woman were sent to the
new world
They were mainly poor
like before but instead of
sending city dwelling
girls, the government
sent more women with
agricultural
backgrounds.


Marquis de Tracy
was a statesman and
a military leader
He was made
lieutenant general of
New France, and
since the Governor
was gone at the time
he represented
Governor in the
Sovereign council


Marquis de Tracy
initiated a brutal war
against the Iroquois,
which the French
won
In doing this he also
destroyed much of
their crops and
villages


After he was done
with the Iroquois,
Marquis de Tracy
attacked the
Mohawk
He beat them as well,
claimed their lands
for France, and
forced them to
convert and become
Roman Catholic




first Governor General of
