What
is
Physical
Therapy
(PT)?
Physical Therapy...
is defined as the care and services provided by or under
the
direction and supervision of a physical therapist.
Physical therapists…
provide services to patients with impairments, functional
limitations, disabilities, or changes in physical function
and health status resulting from injury, disease, or
other causes.

Professor and Program Director
PT Education
Need for Physical Therapy in China
Disability
Approximately 82 million individuals with disabilities*, about 50 million need physical
therapy (rehabilitation) services
Injury rate
1 million people become disabled every year because of traffic or industrial accidents
Aging society
144 million over 60 years old, estimated that 1/2 needs physical therapy services
Increased number of citizens living with chronic illness
More then 200 million, estimated that 1/2 needs physical therapy services
*Data sources: The Second China Sampling Survey on disability, 2006
Physical
Therapy/Rehabilitation in China
Hospital Based Acute Rehabilitation
A separated department has been established in most teaching
hospitals
Rehabilitation center
Most center to those disabled by industrial accidents
More and more patients being seen for complications of chronic
diseases
Family Involvement in Long Term Rehabilitation
Under developing
No therapists work specifically for school or with family
Physical Therapy/Rehabilitation in China
In developed countries:
15-70 therapist per 100 thousand people
Therapist : rehabilitation specialist physicians > 2:1
China:
0.4 therapist per 100 thousand people, there are less than 10 thousand
therapists in practice
Major lack of qualified rehabilitation physicians
A conservative estimate of China’s needs:
China will need 35
thousand therapists in hospitals, and at
least 300 thousand therapists in total

What is a DPT?
It is a clinical doctorate promoted as the
degree
of choice by American Physical Therapy
Association
It is similar to other clinical doctorates such
as the PharmD degree
This degree is not equivalent to a PhD degree and does not
prepare the graduate for a traditional academic career where
the emphasis is teaching and performing independent
research
