KEY TERMS
1. Global Positioning System (GPS) - is a network of satellites and receiving devices used to determine
the location of something on Earth.
2. Hearing Stage - a brief court session that resolves a specific question before a full court trial takes
place, or to such specialized proceedings as administrative hearings.
3. Passive agent - whenever the agent of an action is not the subject of the sentence.
4. Paternal officer - protect both the offender and community by means of assistance, lectures, praise,
and blame.
5. Preliminary hearing - is like a mini-trial. The prosecution will call witnesses and introduce evidence,
and the defense can cross-examine witnesses.
6. Presentence investigation report - a report prepared by a probation officer upon conviction of a
defendant that assists the sentencing court in imposing an appropriate sentence.
7. Probation - the release of an offender from detention, subject to a period of good behavior under
supervision.
8. Punitive officer - The capacity of one person, party, or organization to punish, and/or the perception
associated with fear of harm or retaliation.
9. Sentencing stage - After a criminal defendant is convicted or pleads guilty, a judge will decide on the
appropriate punishment during the sentencing phase of a criminal case.
10.Technical violations - a person did not comply with a condition of their supervision, such as missing a
check-in with their supervision officer or failing a drug test.
11.Welfare worker - someone employed to provide social services (especially to the disadvantaged).
