CONTENT
PROVIDE GOOD WORKING CONDITIONS
It is extremely important that managers provide employees with the basic right to a clean and safe
working environment – whatever the job is. Where employees are expected to be productive in an
unhealthy and unsafe work- space, resentment builds towards management and conflict follows. The
most admired managers treat employees well and provide work-spaces that they themselves would be
comfortable to work in.
REWARD EMPLOYEES FOR THEIR EFFORTS (MOTIVATE)
A good manager does not merely focus on the ‘bottom line’ or profit maximization. While it is important
to ensure that profit is made, it is also important to take the time to recognize and reward the
employees who are the driving force behind the success or profitability of the organization. Where this
is done, employees feel appreciated, valued, and motivated to work even harder. This in turn is likely to
have a positive impact on profits.
Motivation takes TWO forms: FINANCIAL and NON-FINANCIAL.
We will look at these briefly.
Financial Motivation
Why do people work? The obvious answer to this is to earn money, and this is of course correct. The
more money a worker earns, the better is their potential for a higher standard of living. The higher
earner can afford a nicer home and car, better food and clothes, and maybe more exotic holidays.
Higher-income also gives an employee a sense of security.
While financial motivation is important, there are many other ways that workers are motivated other
than financial incentives.
Non-financial motivation
ESTABLISH CLEAR GRIEVANCE PROCEDURES
Even under the best of circumstances, conflict may still arise. It is therefore important that management
put structures in place to handle conflict. Where clear guidelines are provided, the risk of a conflict
escalating to the point of industrial action is significantly reduced. Clear grievance procedures provide
the oppo rtunityfor dialogue and amicable resolutions to disputes.
