Med Surg Chapter 35 Notes:
My notes:
A deceleration is a decrease in the fetal
heart rate below the fetal baseline heart rate.
An early deceleration is defined as a
waveform with a gradual decrease and
return to baseline with time from onset of
the deceleration to the lowest point of
the deceleration (nadir) >30 seconds.
Covid 19:
Pregnant people seem to have the same
risk as adults who are not pregnant to get
Covid 19.


Pregnant people have changes in
their bodies that may increase their
risk of some infections.
Pregnant people have had a higher
risk of severe illness when infected
with viruses from the same family as
COVID-19 and other viral
respiratory infections, such as
influenza.
Mother-to-child transmission of
coronavirus during pregnancy is unlikely,
but after birth a newborn is susceptible to
person-to-person spread.
Breast milk provides protection against
many illnesses and is the best source of
nutrition for most infants.
Pregnancy is a state of
hypercoagulability. This is essential in
protecting the mother against
excessive blood loss during childbirth
and placental separation. However,
this state can increase the risk of
thromboembolic disorders during the
postpartum period. Three factors
predispose pregnant women to
thromboembolic disorders: stasis
(compression of the large veins by the
gravid uterus), altered coagulation
(state of pregnancy), and localized
vascular damage (may oc Risk factors
for thromboembolic disorders are
anemia, diabetes mellitus, cigarette
smoking, obesity, preeclampsia
secondary to exaggeration of
hypercoagulable state, hypertension,
varicose veins, pregnancy, oral
contraceptive use, cesarean birth,
previous thromboembolic disease,
multiparty, inactivity, and advanced
maternal age.cur during birthing
process).
