ASSIGNMENT- STRESS ANS STRAIN
Q1.A copper rod of diameter 80mm and length 12mnhas a tensile force of 15KN applied to it.
Calculate
a) The stress in the rod (MPa)
b) By how much the rod extends when the load is applied.
Take the modulus of elasticity for copper as 100GPa.
Q2.A stone of mass 30g is released from a catapult whose rubber has been stretched through
6cm.If the force constant of the rubber is 200N/m.
Calculate the velocity with which the stone leaves the catapult.
Q3.A wire 3m long and 3.15mm diameter is extended by 0.9mm.When a tensile force of 200N is
applied to it.
Calculate
a) young’s modulus of elasticity for the material for the wire.
b) strain in wire
c) stress in wire, assuming that the elastic limit has not been exceeded.
Q4.A brass tube has an internal diameter of 120mm and outside diameter of 150mm and is
used to support a load of 5KN.The tube is 500mm long before the load is applied.
Calculate by how much the tube contract when loaded, taking the modulus of elasticity
for brass as 90GPa.
Q5.A steam pipe has an outside diameter of 75mm, an inside diameter of 65mm, and a length
of 5m, all measurement being taken at 20°C.
a) calculate the unrestricted expansion, when steam at 100°C is passed through the pipe.
b) the expansion joints permit half of this expansion; calculate the remaining compressive force
acting on the pipe.
Take E as 200000MN/m², coefficient of linear expansion as 12x10 -6/°C or 0.000012/°C
