Topic 1
Many parents give children a weekly or monthly allowance regardless of their
behaviour because they believe an allowance teaches children to be financially
responsible. Other parents only give children an allowance as a reward for completing
chores or when they have behaved properly. Explain what you think parents should do
and why.
Topic 2
Many junior high and high schools around the country now require students to spend
a certain number of hours each term doing volunteer work or community service.
Some people believe this is an excellent idea that promotes good citizenship and
cultivates compassion. Others feel that forced volunteerism is not volunteerism at all.
How do you feel about this issue? Use specific reasons and examples to support your
position.

Persuasive Writing:
Revise the passage, combining short sentences into longer sentences by using the methods
you have learned. In some cases you can combine more than two sentences. Remember to
check for correct punctuation. Write the revised passage on the lines provided.
Example Sharks lose their teeth. They eat almost constantly. They also grow new ones. They
lose
teeth continually.
While they eat almost constantly, sharks continually lose their teeth and grow new
ones.
The teeth in front become worn. A whole row of fresh teeth is directly behind them. A shark
matures. Its new teeth are larger than its old ones. One shark can wear out and replenish
thousands
of teeth. A shark can do this during its lifetime.
Different species of sharks have different types of teeth. The size of teeth varies widely. Shapes
may also vary. This depends on the food a species eats. Tiger sharks, for example, are
omnivorous
eaters. Their food ranges from turtles to seabirds. They have scale-shaped teeth. Their strong
teeth
can crush a turtle’s shell. They can also crush a seabird’s bones. A sand tiger shark has curved
teeth.
They are a sharp, deadly snare for squid or fish. The Port Jackson shark has tiny, pointed teeth
for
snatching prey. These teeth are at the front of its mouth. At the back of its mouth are powerful
teeth.
