APUSH Summer Reading Assignment
Directions: APUSH students will read the first two chapters in the textbook, United States History
by AMSCO, and completing the assignment below. Additionally, students will read Howard Zinn’s
article titled “Columbus, the Indians, and Human Progress” from his book A People’s History of the
United States, and answer the question below.
You will need to pick up your APUSH textbook at the bookstore the week of May 23rd.

Assignment: Complete the following requirements for each chapter (1 and 2) of the textbook
 5 people and their significance/importance to American History
 10 events in chronological order with their significance/importance to American History
 10 terms with their definitions
 The Stimulus Based Questions (Multiple Choice Questions) at the end of each chapter.
Along with the correct answer, find and include the page number where the answer can
be found.
 Either find a sentence from the text, or create your own, that best summarizes the
content and main ideas of the chapter.
These are called OnePagers, and you will be completing them throughout the course of the year. They
may be typed or handwritten, but they must be legible and turned in as a hardcopy. No electronic
submissions. Add color to increase the organization and overall appeal if you wish.
Assignment: Answer the following question about Zinn’s article:

Columbus Day is a national holiday recognized by the United States to honor the arrival of
Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. Over time, the legacy of
Columbus has changed from one of a hero, to one of a villain.
Use the information from Zinn and your knowledge of American History to evaluate
the impact Christopher Columbus had on the New World. (250 words)
Your answer should be typed, double spaced and turned in on the due date listed below.
Due Date: Both assignments are due the second day of school, Thursday, August 11th. Additionally,
you should come to class ready to discuss the content of Chapters 1 and 2, and the Zinn article.
