2016-17 AP/ECE U.S. History Summer Assignment

Dear  Students:  

The  three  assignments  below  comprise  your  summer  responsibilities  for  ECE/AP  U.S.  History,  and  will  be  the  Cirst  step  in   preparing   you   to   successfully   meet   the   challenges   associated   with   this   American   history   survey  course.    

The   following   textbook   is   required   for   the   summer   assignments   and   the   school   year.     I   strongly  recommend  that  you  buy  it  so  that  you  can  write  in  it  just  as  you  will  in  college.    The   text  can  be  purchased  through  Amazon  and  elsewhere  for  approximately  $40.

Please   note   that   previous   editions   of   the   text   are   available;   however,   this   new   edition   (2015)   has   been   revised  and  contains  new  features  that  reGlect  the  updated  Advanced  Placement  exam  administered  in  May.

 NO  LATER  than  Friday,  July  22.    Assignment  #2  must   be  emailed  NO  LATER  than  Friday,  August  12.    Failure  to  submit  either  assignment  by  the  prescribed  deadlines  will  result   in  a  zero.    No  excuses  will  be  tolerated.    Bring  a  hard  copy  of  Assignment  #3  to  the  Cirst  FULL  day  of  class.      

Assignment #1 (Due Friday, July 22)

First,  read  the  handout  titled,  “The  Diverse  Communities  of  the  Americas  in  the  1400s.”    Next,  read  chapter  one  of  the   textbook  (pp.  2-­‐13).    Afterwards,  thoroughly  answer  the  following  questions.    Each  of  your  responses  should  be  about  a   half  page  in  length.  

North  America  was  not  an  empty  wilderness,  but  rather  an  area  inhabited  by  people’s  who  possessed  a  wide  range  of  complex   and  unique  cultures.      

1.    Support  the  above  statement  using  evidence  from  TWO  of  the  following  American  Indian  tribes:  

•  The  Pueblos  of  the  Southwest  

•  The  Tribes  of  the  Mississippi  (Creeks,  Choctaws,  Cherokees…)    

•  The  Iroquois  Confederacy  (Mohawks,  Oneidas,  Senecas…)  

•  The  Tribes  of  the  Atlantic  

2.    Identify  and  discuss  TWO  similarities  among  the  diverse  tribes  living  in  North  America.  

3.     Discuss   how   ONE   of   the   following   contributed   to   either   the   motivation   or   the   means   for   European   exploration   and   colonization  of  the  Americas  in  the  late  15th  century.

•  religion  

•  trade  

Assignment #2 (Due Friday, August 12)

First,   read   the   Howard   Zinn   essay   titled,   “Columbus,   the   Indians,   and   Human   Progress.”     A   PDF   of   this   essay   can   be   downloaded  at  the  following  web  address:    http://history.powelltown.com/pdfs/Zinn.pdf?lbisphpreq=1  

Afterwards,  thoughtfully  respond  to  the  following  questions.    Similar  to  the  Cirst  assignment,  limit  your  responses  to  about   a  half  page.  

1.     To   what   extent   does   the   quotation,   “Total   control   led   to   total   cruelty,”   describe   the   general   treatment   of   Native  

Americans  by  either  the  Spanish  or  the  English.    

2.    Contrast  the  Indian  communities  and  the  European  explorers/colonists.    Provide  examples  that  illustrate  this  extreme   juxtaposition.  

3.     Howard   Zinn’s   “story”   of   Columbus   illustrates   his   intent   as   a   historian:     to   provide   a   voice   for   the   “oppressed,   the   vanquished,  the  marginalized,  the  untold….”      Please  share  your  thoughts  about  this  essay  by  Cilling  in  the  blank  with  one   of  the  word  choices.  

Zinn’s  approach  to  history  is  ________________  (balanced/biased/shocking/necessary…).  

When  answering,  consider  your  personal  experiences  as  a  student  of  history  (what  you’ve  read,  been  exposed  to,  taught,   witnessed…).  

Assignment #3 (Due the first FULL day of class)

Take  notes  on  chapters  1-­‐3  in  the  textbook.    You  may  not  have  more  than  two  pages  of  notes  per  chapter.    You  must  use  a   font  that  is  no  smaller  than  size  10.      You  may  use  these  notes  for  a  multiple-­‐choice  test  that  will  be  administered  on  the  

Cirst  FULL  day  of  class.
