SAFEWAY® NYLON PIN AND SLEEVE DEVICES
GENERAL SPECIFICATIONS
Applications: Temporary power systems, power disconnect for portable processing equipment,
machinery intended for export and users of foreign-built equipment.
Construction:
• Type G nylon housing — weatherproof (IP44), impact-resistant, chemical-resistant.
• Type G nylon contact carrier.
• Deadfront construction.
• Self-adjusting split contact sleeves. Nickel-plated steel spring compensates for wear, maintains
constant pressure along contact surface to ensure electrical continuity and grounding.
• Latching mechanism prevents accidental disengagement.
• Keyway for fast, accurate alignment.
• Internal strain relief with "swing away" feature.
• External strain relief reduces bending arc of cable.
• Large, identified terminals accept conductors one or two sizes larger or smaller than normal.
• "Onion ring" neoprene bushing in cable grip accommodates wide range of cable sizes.
Approvals: U.L. Listed. CSA Certified. Conforms to IEC 309-1 and 309-2 Standards.1

IEC 309 PIN AND SLEEVE
CONFIGURATION AND
COLOR-CODING STANDARD
1EC 309-1 and 309-2 are a worldwide pin and sleeve standard established by the International Electrotechnical Commission. It meets
requirements of Section 410-56(g) of the National Electrical Code.
Contact Positions
The grounding contact position is based on a clock face. With the keyway at bottom, the female
grounding contact will appear at one of the 12 clock positions. Example: all 480VAC receptacles
and connectors, regardless of amperage, have their grounding sleeve at 7 o'clock (which puts die
grounding pin on all mating plugs and inlets at 5 o'clock).
Voltage Rating Color-Code
The housings of every device in a particular voltage group are identical in color for instant identification. Example: All 480VAC devices are red, all 250VAC devices are blue.
Amperage Rating Identification
Amperage differences can be identified by the relative sizes of the devices. Smallest is 20A,
largest is 60A.
