ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW Cooper University Health Care Cooper University Health Care is based in Camden New Jersey. Cooper University Hospital is the premier, tertiary-­‐care, teaching hospital in southern New Jersey. Cooper welcomed the charter class of Cooper Medical School of Rowan University in 2012, the only four-­‐year medical school in South Jersey. Cooper has a fully employed physician model with 450 physicians in all major medical specialties and sub-­‐specialties. Graduate and undergraduate education are key elements of the system with students from The Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU), and approximately 300 trainees in residencies and fellowships across the spectrum of specialties. Cooper University Hospital is the largest academic medical center (594-­‐bed) and only level 1 trauma center in southern New Jersey. The medical center serves the needs of a broad patient population consisting of primary, secondary and tertiary medical care. Cooper University Hospital is the center of a growing health science campus that includes the main hospital, Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper, the internationally acclaimed Coriell Institute for Research, Three Cooper Plaza medical offices and the Ronald McDonald House. In addition, a new nursing school will be built in partnership with Rutgers University. Consumers and physicians recognize the system as being South Jersey’s leading medical center. In annual surveys assessing the region’s medical care, Cooper’s physicians are frequently recognized as “Top Doctors” in their fields. Adjacent to the Cooper Plaza/Lanning Square neighborhood, Cooper has a long history of outreach and service efforts to its local community. Some of these initiatives include health and wellness programs for the neighborhood, development of three neighborhood parks and playground, and outreach to programs into local schools. MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper MD Anderson at Cooper is a partnership between Cooper University Health Care and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. This partnership was formed in October 2013 and brings together southern New Jersey’s leading cancer program and the nation’s leading cancer center -­‐ establishing a fully integrated, comprehensive center treating all types of cancers for patients in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and beyond. MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper brings together MD Anderson’s world-­‐renowned expertise and Cooper’s regional leadership in a partnership that has opened up a broader range of options for cancer patients. Patients in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware now have access to MD Anderson’s world-­‐ renowned treatment protocols, extensive clinical trials and cutting-­‐edge translational research, close to home. In October 2013, MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper opened a new, state-­‐of-­‐ the-­‐art, $100 million, four-­‐story, 103,050 sq. ft. comprehensive cancer center on Cooper’s Health Sciences Campus in Camden to expand access to outstanding cancer care for residents of southern New Jersey and beyond. The new facility, located at Two Cooper Plaza on Haddon Avenue in Camden, NJ, offers expanded programs and services in an environment that fosters a multidisciplinary team approach to medicine. In this dynamic environment, cancer specialists from various medical disciplines (medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, gynecologic oncology and urology) conduct concurrent, complementary clinical sessions, fostering professional interaction and collaboration. MD Anderson at Cooper is also home to the most advanced diagnostic and imaging technology available, including two linear accelerators, high-­‐dose-­‐rate brachytherapy, PET/CT imaging, exam and procedure rooms, treatment areas and a bright, modern chemotherapy infusion suite. Patients benefit from easy access to advanced treatment technologies and a full range of supportive care services including genetic testing and counseling, nutrition counseling, social work services, physical rehabilitation, complementary medicine therapies and behavioral health support – all under one roof. The new MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper has broadened access to clinical trials and research through our affiliation with the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University and our new partnership with The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. In addition to the advanced clinical environment, the cancer center features a two-­‐story, open lobby with cascading natural light, creating a welcoming environment for patients and their families. A scenic, outdoor Tranquility Garden provides patients and families with a retreat to relax in a calm and peaceful environment. Health education, outreach and screening programs will be available on site to help build a healthier community. Cancer Care in Voorhees In addition to the new cancer center in Camden, cancer services have been enhanced and expanded at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper in Voorhees. The Voorhees campus includes a 75k square foot oncology facility providing a full range of ambulatory cancer services. The Department of Radiation Oncology has recently added a second linear accelerator – a device used to deliver radiation treatments for patients with cancer – improving patient access to lifesaving cancer treatments. Cooper Radiology will add a new permanent PET/CT scanner in Voorhees. 4 MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper Vision Statement “We will be the premier cancer prevention, education and care provider: built on expert multidisciplinary teams, providing a positive, personalized patient experience, that is innovative and research grounded.” For more detailed information, including oncology volumes and quality metrics, please view the MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper Annual Report online at: http://assets.cooperhealth.org/pdf/MDAC2014AnnualReportweb.pdf MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology Specialists in the Hematology and Medical Oncology Division of MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper treat patients with benign and malignant hematologic diseases -­‐ anemia, leukemia, lymphomas and bleeding disorders. In the oncology arena, the hematology/oncology physicians work as integral parts of interdisciplinary teams to provide excellent patient care. Members of the division are dispersed across the major cancer sites with strong programs in breast, colorectal, lung, head and neck, brain, melanoma, and GU malignancies. MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper's Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology, which has grown in recent years to now include 17 physicians who are board certified in hematology and/or medical oncology, offers both inpatient and outpatient care for a full range of cancers and blood disorders. Comprehensive outpatient care, including laboratory, chemotherapy and other infusion services, is available in three convenient facilities in Voorhees, Willingboro and Camden. A fourth office in Sewell, New Jersey offers patients outpatient office visits. Inpatient care is provided in a dedicated 30-­‐bed inpatient unit at Cooper University Hospital in Camden. The Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology administrative offices are located in the newly opened cancer center located on the Cooper Health Sciences Campus in Camden, New Jersey. The facility houses multidisciplinary clinical space for hematology/medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology and gynecologic oncology programs and services. Fellowship Program The MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper -­‐ Cooper University Hospital Hematology and Medical Oncology Fellowship Program is an ACGME-­‐accredited three-­‐year comprehensive fellowship program that offers two positions per year. The hematology/oncology fellowship program provides a large and diverse patient population allowing fellows to gain experience in oncological, benign and malignant hematological diseases in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. The program offers experience in molecular biology, coagulation, blood bank, and laboratory medicine. Fellows are exposed to all aspects of clinical research and treatment through the fellowship program. Clinical Research Clinical research activities include local investigator initiated protocols, pharmaceutical directed trials as well as NCI sponsored trials as main members of NRG. An increasing number of MD Anderson sponsored trials are being opened at Cooper. The clinical trials office encompasses a staff 5 of ten with regulatory, data management, and clinical research expertise. Staff are available to assist in providing information on studies and inpatient accrual. Community Description MD Anderson Cooper Cancer Center operates two campuses in Camden and Voorhees in southern New Jersey across from Philadelphia. A third main campus is planned in Moorestown. Camden is located just across the river from Philadelphia. Voorhees and Moorestown are located to the east and north of Camden. Camden is an urban city that became a symbol of urban decay. Today the City is in renewal and transition with a major influx of capital including development of the waterfront district which includes housing, nightlife and restaurants. Cooper Medical Center, Rowan Medical School and the new Rutgers School for Nursing are also a major part of the city’s renewal. Campbell Soup’s Corporate Headquarters is located in Camden. In 2014 Lockheed Martin, and Subaru announced plans to open facilities in the city. Voorhees and Cherry Hill are some of the most attractive communities in southern New Jersey. Cherry Hill has been named among the best places to live in the US by Money magazine. From a lifestyle standpoint, people who prefer an urban lifestyle live in either Philadelphia or more recently Camden and beautiful suburban areas nearby including Cherry Hill and Voorhees Township. The areas encompassing southern New Jersey and Philadelphia are home to some of the best public and private schools and major academic centers in the country. The surrounding area is also known for its scenic beauty from the Delaware Valley to the New Jersey and Delaware shores. POSITION SUMMARY Position Title: Division Head, Hematology and Medical Oncology The Division Head, Hematology and Medical Oncology provides vision, clinical direction and ongoing development of the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology, which has as its primary mission the provision of outstanding, patient-­‐focused clinical care to patients with solid tumors, hematologic malignancies and benign hematologic conditions. The role is an outstanding opportunity to build, in partnership with one of the world’s leading academic cancer centers, a robust, innovative program within a growing cancer center that is recognized as a regional leader for clinical quality. This position will be a key leader within the organization, charged with building and maintaining a cohesive division that demonstrates a strong commitment to the highest standards of clinical care, education and training, and research. 6 The Division Head is a member of the leadership team of the cancer center and has responsibility for directing, planning and coordinating all inpatient and outpatient clinical activities associated with the division. This position will ensure that the clinical activities of the division are efficient, effective, and appropriately support the research-­‐driven, multidisciplinary, patient-­‐centered, clinical mission of the cancer center. The position will have operational and fiscal oversight for the division. This position reports directly to Dr. Generosa Grana, Director, MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper and is matrixed to the Division Head, Cancer Medicine, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. For academic matters, the position reports to Dr. Phillip Dellinger, Chief of the Department of Medicine at Cooper University Health Care and Chair of Medicine at the Cooper Medical School – Rowan University. The Division of Hematology/Medical Oncology offers a fellowship program and is actively involved in the educational elements of the Internal Medicine residency program and in the medical school curriculum of CMSRU. An academic title with Cooper Medical School of Rowan University will be proposed, as will an Adjunct academic title with MD Anderson Cancer Center. III. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Additional duties and responsibilities of the role include: •
Provide outstanding clinical care to patients as a clinician; build and maintain a division that provides a quality of clinical care that aligns with MD Anderson; •
Successfully drive clinical integration with the MD Anderson flagship to ensure that MDACC at Cooper provides its patients with access to world-­‐class protocols and cutting-­‐edge therapies and diagnostics; •
Work to build the continued integration of clinical and translational research activities in hematology and medical oncology between MDACC at Cooper and the flagship in Houston, building the breadth of clinical trials available at Cooper; •
Further build the size and breadth of the division; recruit outstanding faculty and develop strength in specialty areas identified as top priorities for the institution; •
Foster and maintain collaborative, productive relationships with key stakeholders at the MD Anderson flagship and the Cooper Medical School at Rowan University; •
Oversee the medical oncology fellowship program; work with the fellowship program director to ensure the program is run to a high standard; •
Mentor faculty clinically and academically; foster and enable an increase in the scholarly output of the division; •
In collaboration with relevant leaders across the MD Anderson flagship, Cooper Medical School at Rowan University and Cooper Health System, support in improving the functioning and coordination of clinical trials and translational research; 7 •
Assist and support in the evaluation and development of organizational priorities including the physician compensation plan; •
Ensure the collaborative, effective and cohesive functioning of the division; •
Maintain oversight and management of departmental physicians’ adherence to high standards of clinical and organizational conduct; •
Work across the organization to ensure that clinical protocols for medical oncology are reliably integrated / incorporated within the Center’s EPIC electronic health record. IV.
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES Within the first 18-­‐24 months, the successful Division Head, Hematology and Oncology will have: •
Led in the integration, growth and development of the research base and activities of the MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper; •
In collaboration with leaders at MD Anderson and Cooper, strengthened clinical integration / access between the MD Anderson flagship and the MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper and ensured that the quality of clinical care aligns with that of MD Anderson; •
Fostered and strengthened the cohesiveness and shared identity of the medical oncology division; •
Have consistently demonstrated clinical oncology practice at the highest level, serving as a mentor and example to staff in the division; •
Established him or herself as a leader with a passion for and commitment to clinical education, mentorship, and staff/physician development; •
Capitalized upon and strengthened opportunities for clinical training and education at MD Anderson; increased collaboration between clinicians at Cooper and Houston; •
Demonstrated excellent fiscal and operational leadership / responsibility for the division of medical oncology; •
Led / supported in the growth and development of medical oncology specialties highlighted for development and growth, including growth of Thoracic Oncology and the establishment of a Bone Marrow Transplant program; •
Capitalized on the dynamic and accessible structure of MDACC at Cooper to conceptualize and develop innovative approaches that further build the Center and increase the benefit the Center brings to patients; •
Established him/herself as a trusted collaborator and colleague within the organization who effectively coordinates with other Division Heads as well as leaders in affiliated organizations; •
Worked with Dr. Grana and other key leaders within the organization to strategically develop and implement plans to grow and capture additional oncology market share in southern New Jersey; •
Worked collaboratively with the Chair of Medicine / Medical School leadership to 8 strengthen and grow the academic medical oncology education provided, including the growth and development of scholarly output of the division, and the medical oncology fellowship program; •
Continued to grow the reputation of the Center through outstanding clinical care and research, supporting the continued decline of outmigration of patients out of state; •
Proven themselves as an effective and creative collaborator who can problem-­‐solve and think creatively about ways to leverage the partnership to maximize benefit to both institutions and the patients they serve; •
Established an understanding of the medical oncology landscape in the region from an epidemiological and health outcomes perspective and worked collaboratively to support health system population health initiatives; •
Have established him or herself as an outstanding leader with the potential to excel at higher levels of leadership within the organization. V. CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS Candidates for the position of Division Head, Hematology and Medical Oncology must be board-­‐
certified in hematology or medical oncology and have a minimum of 7-­‐10 years clinical experience post-­‐fellowship, to include significant clinical experience in an academic cancer environment. The new Division Head will be a leader with the desire and expertise to build an outstanding team and to, collaboratively and strategically, develop and implement plans that fully realize the potential of the partnership between MD Anderson and Cooper. He/she will possess a reputation as an outstanding clinician, with demonstrated experience managing clinical operations in oncology. The successful candidate will possess a passion for fostering and performing outstanding clinical oncology care; for building / enabling clinical and translational oncology research programs; and for the education, mentorship, and development of younger oncologists. He/she will possess enthusiasm and commitment to bringing world-­‐class clinical care and research to patients in southern New Jersey, in alignment with the vision of the MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper and that realizes the full potential of the partnership.
