Employment Counsellor – Full- Time permanent Position
We are currently seeking an Employment Counsellor based in our office in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
Normal Work Hours: Mon-Fri, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with occasional flexibility to accommodate client need.
Reporting to the Manager of Employment Services, you will be part of a committed and client-centered team
supporting individuals 19 years of age and older with a primary diagnosis of a mental illness. Clients are
supported through a spectrum of pre-employment assessment, employment-related education and
assistance, employment counseling and follow-up support. The Counsellor is a caring and pleasant individual
who exhibits above average motivation, innovation, flexibility, collaboration and non-traditional thinking.
He/she is familiar with Psychosocial Rehabilitation models and best practices associated with the provision of
employment services that are flexible, appropriate and responsive to the individual’s needs, readiness,
interests, goals, and abilities. The Counsellor strives to reach a successful employment-related outcome for
those served by LakeCity Employment Services.
Requirements:

A minimum of an undergraduate degree with demonstrated experience in working with special populations
and particularly the mental health services sector. Equivalencies of education and experience may be
considered.
Valid NS Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle with the ability to travel frequently for
appointments within the greater Halifax area.
Proof of current (standard) First Aid and CPR Certification.
Must provide a current criminal record check including Vulnerable Sector Search as a condition of
employment.
Demonstrable proficiency with computer databases and software programs, including the Microsoft Office
Suite and on-line employment tools.
Well-developed organizational and planning, time management, analytical, interpersonal, and
problem/conflict resolution skills.
Demonstrated record keeping and reporting skills.
Flexible and cooperative team player who works well both independently and within a team, and who
embraces new challenges and change.
Preference will be given to those who can demonstrate experience in the following:

Experience as an employment/career counseling practitioner.
NVCI/Crisis Intervention certification.
Medication Awareness.
Knowledge of a variety of mental illness treatment options and mental wellness approaches.
Experience in the community employment service sector with the ability to motivate, engage and build
productive relationships. Established networking opportunities in the sector an asset.
Knowledge of community resources including training, funding and support for the clientele served.
Knowledge and experience with the LAMPSs database.
Prior experience in a not for profit organization.
