Switches can be operated in different ways; hands, head, foot etc. The switch may need a special mounting system to allow the desired method to be used.
Repeatability - A switch user will have to make a number of switch presses which may take considerable effort.
Outcome - Make sure that the result of their efforts is worthwhile. Remember that there may be easier ways of doing something rather than struggling to use a switch.
Acceptability - The user’s choice is final.
Access to other activities - The switch position should not obscure the task to be operated and should not get in the way of daily activities. The user should be able to work the switch and see the activity easily - remember that it can take some time for them to transfer their attention from the switch to the task. If this takes too long they may miss the activity.

Some software can be played just by using the space bar or a few other keys on your computer’s keyboard.
This software can also be used with special switches, for children who are unable to use the keyboard. Switches for this kind of use come in all shapes and sizes.
To connect these switches to the computer you need a “switch interface”. This is a little box with a cable that normally plugs into your computer’s USB port. The switch interface has about 4 small round sockets. You plug your switches into these. Simple!
When you press a switch, the interface box makes the computer think that the space bar (or some other key) is being pressed. So if you run a storybook activity, where normally you would press the space bar to turn the pages, you can now use a switch to do the same. Interface boxes can be set to behave like different keyboard keys or even the mouse buttons.

Simple switch devices are often used to introduce people to the use of switches. Observation of a child using a switch with a toy (with a battery adapter) can be sufficient to establish whether or not they have an understanding of cause and effect; that is they are aware that their pressing the switch is actually causing the device to operate. For some users this may have to be done by allowing them to make switch presses and to gradually establish a connection between this and their switch presses. However, even the simplest switch toys can be put to more use by involving the users’ in games based on their use of the switch. This can provide opportunities to refine their switch operation by developing more control.

How SmartNav Works
SmartNav 4 uses an infrared (IR) camera to track your head movements. You reflect IR light back to the SmartNav, which sends instructions to your computer to move your mouse cursor.
How Is My Head Movement Tracked?
SmartNav tracks reflections from a tiny dot, which you can place anywhere. Place the paper thin tiny reflective dot on the part of your body you’d like to control the cursor with. Preferred options include:
Head, Hand, Hat, Glasses, Mic Boom
Where Do I Put The Smartnav?
SmartNav mounts on top of your monitor, laptop or communication device facing you. SmartNav can also be threaded onto a mini tripod and sit next to your computer. The device can be placed anywhere as long as it can see the reflective accessory you’ve chosen to wear.
How Much Do I Move?
Less than an inch of head movement is more than enough to move the cursor across your entire screen. This is also adjustable in the software speed settings. SmartNav has a 45 degree Field of View
(FOV) and usually sits about 2 feet away from your head. Thus you have almost two feet of free “head space” in which to move that simple inch.
How Do I Click?
SmartNav offers multiple clicking options.
Hotkeys: Re-map keys from your keyboard and assign them to emulate the Left, Right and Middle mouse buttons.
Dwell-Clicking Software: Click by hovering the cursor in one spot for a small (and adjustable) amount of time. A full dwell-clicking system and on-screen keyboard are included in the AT software package, allowing for total hands free operation.
Ability Switches: Industry standard input switch support allows you to plug two switches into SmartNav for more clicking options.

The Tobii CDot Tracker is a head mouse tracker that replaces a regular mouse. It works by tracking the exact movements of a small reflective dot that is placed on the forehead, nose, glasses or any other visible area of the body. Once the dot is placed, its movements are tracked by a high-resolution, intelligent camera and are instantly translated into accurate mouse cursor movements. Clicking can be done through dwell (the pausing of the cursor over an object on the screen for a preprogrammed amount of time) or by using a switch.

Using the Tobii CDot Tracker is easy. Just plug it in to your device and it will instantly begin to track. It uses standard Windows mouse controls and therefore requires no additional software or drivers. The Tobii CDot Tracker is built into a solid metal casing that fits snugly into the bottom of a
Tobii C8, C12 or C15 communication device. It is robust and reliable with no cables or any other protruding parts that could complicate use or performance.
Freedom to move
The Tobii CDot Tracker can be operated accurately from a distance of up to five feet/150 cm and at angles from the device of up to 45 degrees. This gives users a wide range of motion and nearly complete freedom of movement. Whenever a user is located inside of this “trackbox” the Tobii CDot Tracker will automatically start tracking. If the user leaves the trackbox and then returns, the Tobii CDot Tracker will automatically begin tracking again. There is no need to reset or restart your Tobii CDot Tracker or your communication system. It is also easy to see when the
