My placement within AECOM’s bridges department
involved the assessment of several rail bridges.
This involved the calculation of tolerances and live loads,
which I applied to a finite element (FE) model to determine
the category of a rail bridge. I also verified the permanent
loads applied to several other FE models by hand-calculating
the loads and comparing them with the model’s output.

I thoroughly enjoyed my placement. Not only was the
office a pleasant environment to work in, but the work was
technical and interesting. A site visit to Inverurie was my
favourite part as it was important for me to put all the work
done in the office into context and was a rare opportunity
to ask the site engineers questions about the project. I
learned a lot about the practicalities of construction.
My placement was very useful in helping me gain
practical skills. Everybody leaves university with the
similar degree, it is undoubtedly the knowledge and
skills gained on placement which sets you apart.
