Word processing programs allow many different types of formatting

Word processing programs allow many different types of formatting, which is the manipulation of text
to change its appearance at the word, paragraph, or document level. Many word processing applications
include text, paragraph, and document formatting.
Text formatting features include the ability to change the font type, size, color, and style such as bold,
italic, or underlined. A user can also adjust the leading, the space between lines, and kerning, which is
the amount of space that appears between letters. Paragraph formatting changes the way a body of text
flows on the page. Features related to the appearance of a paragraph include placing the text in
columns or tables, aligning the text left, right, center, or justified within the margins; and double-spacing
or single-spacing lines. Document formatting lets users specify the form of a document as a whole,
defining page numbers, headers, footers, paper size, and margin width. Many word processing
programs include a style feature that formats text in a single step. Styles allow users to apply text and
paragraph formatting to a document, and then automatically apply those same attributes to other
sections of text.
