1. As new states were forming in
the western territory, the
Northern and Southern states
disagreed on slave states versus
free states.
2. Richmond fell to General
Ulysses S. Grant and was burned
near the end of the war.
3. The southern states weren’t
happy with the election of
Abraham Lincoln because they
thought he would end slavery.
They seceded from the Union.

against slavery. Abolitionists

which means to put an end to it.
