Background Information
• What we know
• What Legislation & Regulation knows
• The Baby Boomers, Xers and Millennials
• Theories
• Considerations
So, what is a Cohort really?
• Is it a Learning Community?
• Is it an educational plan or maybe a pathway?
• Some might even think it comes from the Greek
Word “Cor” meaning heart… because according to
Mr. Portokalis, EVERY word comes from a Greek
word, right?
Every word comes from a Greek word, right?
Ah…the definition of a cohort
• A cohort is a learning group of between 1220 who enroll in, progress together and
complete a predetermined series of
courses that eventually lead to a degree.

• But how did they do, really
after Fall 2014 was over?
• Let us show you…

What does the MSJC Cohort have to say to
the public?
Marketing Students to Students
Our cohort is evolving into something better
ever year!
• It takes at least two years to grow a cohort
• You must be flexible to “course correct” at a moment’s notice,
especially with the cohort mentors.
• Communication between faculty, deans and support staff is
critical.
• Focus groups and surveys with the cohort students have identified
things that work and don’t work for students.
• Faculty in other disciplines are taking notice and general GE tracks
are in the works at our other campuses.
