RUSS 110. Introduction to Russian Culture
Diverse cultural, historical, and socio-political features of Russian speaking cultures and basic Russian through
film and music. Taught mainly in English. This course augments 101 and 102 and is especially recommended for
students who want more contact with the modern culture and less emphasis on language. 3 Cr. S.

Gen. Ed. and students interested in the world's cultures. It is a valuable addition to the language courses in
Russian, but it is taught in English and does not have any language requirement. The course has the broadest
student base imaginable.

Provide a concise explanation of how the following goal is a “significant focus” of the proposed course.
Goal Area 6: Humanities & Fine Arts
Expand appreciation and critical understanding of changing modes of human expression and systems of
thought in the arts and humanities, and develop abilities in the creation and performance of meaning.
The overall focus of this course is the analysis and comparison of how the
distinct ethnic make-up of each region of the Russian-speaking world
influences the distinct modes of human expression and systems of thought in
the arts and humanities that come from each region. Students will learn
different modes of human expression and systems of thought in the Russianspeaking world and develop abilities to create and perform new meanings
through this knowledge.
