Portfolio Assignment #____
Communication Styles
Communication styles are very important in relation to how we receive and produce
information. Knowing how you receive information can be very helpful when it comes to
studying and processing information because you can organize it in ways that feel natural
to you. In addition, understanding how those around you receive and process information
can be critical in the classroom and the workplace.
There are four communication styles that we rely on: Action, Process, Ideas, and People.
Understanding the styles of the people around you can help you to make more effective
choices in the ways in which you communicate and ultimately enhance your success.
1. Read the pairs of choices.
2. They are not opposites which exclude each other. One will simply describe you
most accurately.
3. Choose that one that best describes you and circle the number on the answer sheet
provided.
4. Total the number of answers for each style.
5. Circle the two learning styles on the matrix for which you have selected the most
answers. It will be Ideas, People, Action, or Process.
6. Then read the description of your strongest communication style.
7. Read the description of your second strongest. You rely on these two styles the
most.
8. Think about the application of this knowledge for yourself and those you
communicate with. For example, if your teacher is an Idea/Process communicator,
then you will be most successful in enlisting their help by explaining what your
idea is and laying out your plan.
9. Answer the following question:
When you have to solve a problem with someone else, how do you want them to
communicate with you? Look at your two strongest communication styles to help
you answer this question. In addition, what listening style do you identify with (in
the Record chapter in the textbook) and how does that work with your preferred
communication style?
10. Turn in your assignment sheet and the test results and then put it in your portfolio.
