Song Project – Record & Mix
Description
You will record and mix a song. You will work together with your lab partners on this project, and
turn in a single collective effort.
Specifications
1. There must be at least 4 drum tracks. At least 2 of them must be acoustic (meaning real drums
that you mic up and record). You may supplement with electronic drums - either from Reason,
or using your own samples.
2. There must be a bass track. This can be acoustic, electric, or synthesized.
3. There must be at least 1 guitar track that is acoustic or electric.
4. There must be at least 1 stereo keyboard track. This can be an acoustic piano, an electric piano,
strings, or otherwise stereo synth sound. Basically, it can’t be a drum or bass sound.
5. You must have at least 2 vocal tracks. DO NOT record three verses of one vocal track, and split
it amongst 3 tracks. I will not give full credit for doing that!
6. You must utilize EQ on at least 3 of your tracks.
7. You must utilize compression on at least 2 of your tracks.
8. You must have at least 2 stereo Aux tracks – 1 with Reverb inserted, and another with Delay
inserted.
9. You must automate at least 2 of your tracks. One must have volume automation, and another
must have either pan or mute automation. Feel free to automate more!
10. You must have 1 stereo master fader track.
11. You must bounce your mix to a stereo interleaved wave file, and import that bounced file into
your session on a stereo audio track.
Due
1. A data CD-R or DVD of your Pro Tools session directory.
2. This project is due Monday, December 9. This will give you 4 or 5 sessions to complete the
project.
Grading
I will grade your projects using the following criteria:
1. Completing the specifications above will be worth 50% of your grade.
2. Having a well organized session with all tracks appropriately labeled, performing clean edits,
properly utilizing your plug-ins, performing effective automation, and ultimately creating a wellbalanced mix will be worth 50% of your grade.
Notes:
You may turn in the project by copying the session folder to me (in my presence).
If you use Reason, be sure to include the Reason file in your session directory.
