People credited with this unit standard are able to: prepare
roads and carparks for use at a snowsport area; direct traffic
and parking of vehicles at a snowsport area; assist
customers at a snowsport area carpark; perform road and
carpark services duties under adverse driving conditions;
and describe emergency procedures.
This unit standard will be of interest to people working as a
member of a road services team.

All activities must comply with the policies, procedures,
and requirements of the enterprises involved and any
relevant environmental, legislative and/or regulatory
requirements which include but are not limited to the
Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 (HSE),
Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation, and Compensation
Act 2001, and their subsequent amendments and
associated regulations.

In this unit standard, company or snowsport area policy
and procedures are instructions to staff that may be
documented and available for reference at each
snowsport area in the form of an operations manual.
Elements and Performance Criteria

Prepare roads and carparks for use at a snowsport area.

1.1
All carparks, road services’ facilities and access roads at the snowsport area
are identified and located.
Range:
1.2
may include – day carparks, overnight carparks, short-term
carparks, authorised carparks, load and unload zones, chain-fitting
areas, chain bays, vehicle maintenance buildings, petrol stations,
breakdown services, large vehicle carparks.
Carparks and road areas are maintained by self or appropriate personnel are
notified, to ensure they meet company or snowsport area standards.
Range:
clearing of snow, removal of rubbish, gritting.

1.3
Icy, slippery, and unsafe surfaces in highly used areas are identified and gritted
by hand or vehicle to ensure customer and worker safety according to company
or snowsport area policy and procedures.
Range:
1.4
highly used areas may include – pedestrian walkways, carparks,
roads, ticketing and customer services areas, rental, ski and
snowboard school, snowshop;
evidence is required for at least five occasions.
Road signs and cones are placed where they are visible to drivers, and their
position is maintained, to ensure safe and controlled traffic flow, and worker and
pedestrian safety in accordance with snowsport area policy and procedures.

may include – clearing of snow.
1.5
Carparks are unlocked and filled according to company or snowsport area
procedures.
1.6
Instructions from supervisors and/or management are followed efficiently and in
a professional manner.

Direct traffic and parking of vehicles at a snowsport area.

2.1
Clear hand directions convey information to vehicle drivers and maximise safe
traffic flow, and vehicle, passenger, pedestrian, and worker safety.
Range:
directions – where the vehicle is to be parked, to move closer to
other vehicles, to stop, to reverse, to exit.
2.2
Vehicles are directed to park with safe distances between them and account is
taken of ground surface, slope gradient, traffic flow, and the safety requirements
of driver, passengers, and worker.
2.3
Carparks are filled to maximum capacity by controlling placement of cars
according to company or snowsport area policy and procedures.

2.4
Worker position and clothing ensures they are visible to driver, safe, and in
accordance with company or snowsport area policy and procedures.
2.5
Large vehicles are directed to park in designated areas according to company
or snowsport area policy and procedures.
Range:
large vehicles may include – buses, trucks, mini buses, vans,
campervans.
2.6
Vehicles authorised to park in the authorised carparks display passes in front
windscreen of vehicle and are parked in accordance with company or
snowsport area policy and procedures.
2.7
Vehicles are counted and tallies recorded according to company or snowsport
area policy and procedures.
2.8
Carparks are monitored according to company or snowsport area policy.
Range:

carparks may include but are not limited to – short-term carparks,
load and unload zones, overnight carparks.
Carparks are cleared of vehicles and secured according to company policy and
procedures.

Assist customers at a snowsport area carpark.

3.1
Advice and assistance to customers is given in a positive and courteous
manner.
Range:
may include advice on – road status, driving, parking, carrying skis
and snowboards, walking, directions, facilities available, hours of
operation;
evidence is required for at least three occasions.

3.2
Customers are assisted with the recovery of stranded vehicles or referred to
experienced personnel in accordance with snowsport area policy and
procedures.
Range:
may include – entering locked cars, checking for petrol flow, jump
starting, towing, changing flat tyres, chain fitting.

Perform road and carpark services duties under adverse driving conditions.

4.1
Traffic is informed of road conditions according to company or snowsport area
policy and procedures.
Range:
4.2
may include – traffic road signs, notice boards, radio
announcement, Public Address announcements.
Traffic is monitored to ensure that cars are properly equipped when there are
restrictions on the road, and drivers are advised of situation and assisted when
required.
Range:
chains are on driving wheels and fitted properly.
4.3
Sufficient carparking and chain-fitting areas are available when there are
restrictions on road access according to company or snowsport area policy and
procedures.
4.4
Information regarding road or carpark maintenance requirements is
communicated to relevant staff.

may include but is not limited to – supervisor, management,
maintenance staff.

Describe emergency procedures.

5.1
Description includes the actions of road and carpark services personnel during
emergency or hazardous situations in carparks or access roads according to
snowsport area emergency plans and/or procedures.
Range:
may include but is not limited to – vehicle breakdown, vehicle
accident, avalanche, lahar, fire, theft from vehicle, damage to
vehicle, dangerous driving, injury.
