Reciprocal Reading
Name ______________________________________________
From Inquiry Strategies by Jeff Wilhelm
In groups of 4, you will read today’s section----every person in the group has a specific task. Make sure you read through
your assigned task and understand your responsibility BEFORE the group starts to read. You will write your assigned task
response on the square that is indicated for your assignment.
Reader/Predictor:
Your job is to read part of the section of text aloud. Then other group members will also read through the remaining
pages, rotating so everyone reads aloud.
After reading, the Questioner, Summarizer, and Connector do their jobs and then they will come back to you. You will
make a prediction about what you think will happen next, based on what you read in today’s section. Your prediction
can be for something that will happen right away, or later on in the story. It doesn’t matter if you are right or wrong.
Share your prediction with the group and discuss whether or not they feel it will come true based on what you have
read. Also, you need to list reasons about whether or not you feel the prediction will come true or not.
Questioner:
Your job is to come up with a Question-Answer-Response think and search questions, based on the section of text that
was just read. A Question-Answer-Response would be a question that you have while reading; maybe you’re wondering
why a character says something or does something; maybe you are having difficulty understanding why the author write
a certain scene a certain way. Have group members think about your questions, and discuss how your question requires
thinking and searching across the text section for answers and to connect it with this and previous chapters. Once all
group members agree on an answer to your questions, write the answers and questions on your square on the back of
this handout.
Summarizer:
Your job is to summarize the passage of text that was just read. Summary sentences should include the main points of
what happened, about 8 total sentences. Share your summary with the group and have them discuss whether or not it is
complete. Add or delete any information to make the summary complete.
Connector:
Your job is to make a connection between what you have just read, and something outside the reading of this particular
section. This could be a connection to something in your life, a connection to something from another text, or you could
also connect it with a movie, article, or story you are familiar with. Explain the connection to the group and have them
also make connection statements. Write down the different connections in your square on the back of this handout.
Reader/Predictor
(write your prediction statements, as well as the group’s
responses about whether or not it will come true and WHY
or why not)
Questioner
(pose questions about the selection---unclear parts,
puzzling information, motivations of characters—why
they do certain things)
Summarizer
(Highlight the key ideas of the reading in 8 or 10
sentences.)
Connector
(make connections between what is read today in the
book and something outside of the reading---other
stories, other movies, other historical events)
