SUMMER SHORT COURSES 2016
Department of Research
Dow University of Health Sciences
APPLIED BIOSTATISTICS
Studies with latest molecules and techniques appear in the literature every day. But how do we know if the latest drug
or intervention actually has merit? Biostatistics is the key. It offers crucial tools for evaluating the significance or impact
of public health researches and interventions. This course comprehensively introduces statistical concepts and analytical
methods as applied to data encountered in biotechnology and biomedical sciences. It emphasizes the basic and applied
concepts of experimental design, quantitative analysis of data, and statistical inferences, as well as manner in which
these technique are applied in the statistical software such as SPSS. This program will also provide appropriate balance
between conceptual statistical understanding and their application in medical sciences.
COURSE OUTLINE:
Descriptive statistics: Measure of central tendency and dispersion, frequency distribution, data representation using
tables, graphs and charts.
Probability: Concept, definition and types of probability, Bayes theorem.
Distribution and confidence interval: The Binomial distribution, the Poisson distribution, the normal distribution and
95% confidence interval for mean.
Sampling Technique: Population, sample, different sampling techniques
Hypothesis testing: Introduction to hypothesis, one and two samples testing, interpretation of P-value, ANOVA and
multiple comparisons, non-parametric testing, chi-square test of independence.
Correlation and regression: Concept and type of correlations and association, simple and multiple linear regressions.
Logistic regression and survival analysis: logistic regression analysis and introduction to survival analysis

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This course is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the research methods currently required to perform
basic research. It emphasizes the basic concepts of quantitative research, qualitative research and mixed design
research methods. The purpose of this course is to educate the students in designing and conducting the original
research addressing health problems. Throughout this process, the students will apply epidemiological research
methods and gain the skills of proposal writing, data collection, data analysis, interpretation and presentation of results
and research report writing. This course will also train the students, how to submit the synopsis/proposals to the
Institutional Review Board (IBR) and to the funding agencies like, Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Pakistan
